Historia
"Big Bob" Bashara put on a respectable face. To his friends in Detroit's affluent suburb of Grosse Pointe, he was a married father of two, Rotary Club President, church usher, and soccer dad who organized charity events with his wife, Jane. To his "slaves", he was "Master Bob", a cocaine-snorting slumlord who operated a sex dungeon and had a submissive girlfriend to do his bidding - and he wanted more slaves to serve him. But Bashara knew he couldn't rule a household of concubines on his income alone. He eyed his wife's sizable retirement account and formulated a murderous plan.

Extremely Boring!

it told the story but not well
Revisado: 05-01-21
I knew about this case before I listened to the book and was quite disappointed with how poorly the book was written. Some things were repeated way too many times and there was no excitement in it whatsoever. The writer laid out the case in the fist chapter and beyond that nothing else was exposed in the rest of the book.
Now to the narration. The way the narrator would present female voices was either shrill or like they're the dumbest creatures ever. I'd suggest introducing female voices when narrating female characters otherwise your narrator will come across as a sexist a hole.

would've really like to listen to this book but

The narrator's slight but noticable speech impediment made me shudder. Also, she's too energetic to put it nicely.

Historia
On a picturesque street in Sacramento County, California, three healthy saplings stand side by side. But what they symbolize are the deaths of three innocent people - two of them children. The man who took their lives, then planted trees in their honor, was their own husband and father. Hearts went out to Jack Barron when his wife, Irene, died mysteriously in her sleep. Soon after, his two young children were also found dead in their beds. Barron claimed they suffered from the same rare genetic disorder as their mother.

unsatisfying ending
Revisado: 02-05-20
so what happened then? it desperately needs a satisfying ending, an update something. it was ok for an introduction to the case. I wouldn't mind more in depth info.

Historia
After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined.

bone-chilling
Revisado: 12-15-19
I never heard of this story but have of a similar that ended in death of one of the abused children. I was happy that it wasn't that story although this was equally horrific. No matter how terrible these stories are we owe it to the victims to power through and listen to what they've gone through. A victim of both emotional and physical abuse I got chocked up and a bit "triggered" but the more I read about other people's experiences the more I'm healing. Pulling these stories out of the shadow of shame and secrecy normalizes the need for help for those suffering from mental health issues and forces people to be more observant and reactionary.

Historia
In February 1990, Oregon State Police arrested John Sosnovke and Laverne Pavlinac for the vicious rape and murder of Taunja Bennet. Pavlinac had come forth and confessed, implicating her boyfriend and producing physical evidence that linked them to the crime. Authorities closed the case. There was just one problem. They had the wrong people. And the real killer wasn't about to let anyone take credit for his kill.

had high hopes for the book
Revisado: 07-18-19
Got this book as a recommendation and was really looking forward to listening. I'm quite a bit disappointed. The writer skates on the surface too much, changes subject too often; at times it was a bit confusing and unclear what he was talking about. A lot of loose ends, so to say. Reads more like a sum of individual blog posts rather than a comprehensive book written by a journalist about a subject. Can say that I've read shorter and more in-depth articles, so quite disappointed with the book. The narrator was so slow and dull that I had to speed it up to be able to follow what he's saying. All in all, if you're not familiar with the subject it's an ok first read but if you already know more than the writer you'll be bored to tears.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.
