Powerful, if Obvious
Revisado: 05-03-25
The thesis proved by this book seems so obvious it is surprising it isn’t talked about more. Prosperity requires stability, private ownership, inclusive institutions. My only knock against the book is that it has too many examples proving the same point rendering the book too long.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Post Apocalyptic Ayn Rand
Revisado: 04-26-25
Nailing Christian Nationalism, the author reduces Christianity to sadism in this post-pox tale of survival. Her alternative, a new “religion” based on the truism “the only constant is change “. The author uses most of the book to proselytize readers through her modern “John Gault”. Once you strip away all this, what is left is The Purge meets The Road through tiresome violence and pointless cruelty.
If you want to present a new “god is change”, let it compete with the actual teachings of Jesus.

Historia
Stories of Your Life and Others presents characters who must confront sudden change-the inevitable rise of automatons or the appearance of aliens-while striving to maintain some sense of normalcy. In the amazing and much-lauded title story (the basis for the 2016 movie Arrival), a grieving mother copes with divorce and the death of her daughter by drawing on her knowledge of alien languages and non-linear memory recollection.

Imaginative
Revisado: 04-24-25
I loved the stories. Each delves into a new world taking the niche to its fulfilling end.
Maybe consider adding a sound affect between stories? Some end on such a soft note where it is easy to miss the chapter title and get the next story confused with the last.

Great Content, Dry Analytics
Revisado: 03-16-25
It is clear why this book is highly praised. The lessons it teaches should be practiced by everyone. However, the language it uses can be overly academic and the examples dry. Instead of saying “the second derivative is negative”, talk about slowing down or deceleration.

Come back to church
Revisado: 03-16-25
I appreciated the sociological metrics, binning people into groups, and the personas representing the groups. However, the call to “come back to church” misses the mark. I appreciated the recommendations of how to improve, but missing the call to discipleship and the deep exploration as to whether churches have the ability to adapt to what is necessary to fulfill the mission of God.

Historia
The days of cultural Christianity are fading. It's time to rethink normal. Suffering and exclusion are normal in a believer's life. At least they should be. This was certainly Jesus' experience. And it's the experience of countless Christians around the world today. No matter your social location or set of experiences, the biblical letter of 1 Peter wants to redefine your expectations and reinvigorate your hope.

Good Fan Fiction
Revisado: 01-26-25
The book is almost exclusively a monologue filling in gaps from the original trilogy. There are very few characters and no character development. Most of the book is one of 2 or 3 characters recounting something or explaining physics. There isn’t much of a plot.
If you enjoyed the original trilogy, you’ll probably like this book too. It has imaginative ideas on a similarly grand scale.

Timely
Revisado: 01-17-25
The book does a great job of simplifying the complex while debunking a millennial thinking. Christian nationalism is rightly highlighted as a threat. Going after capitalism and the free market is oversimplifying. Ignored is the way secular immorality has subtly replaced Biblical authority.
