Ehhhhhh
Revisado: 02-18-22
It was engaging and interesting until it wasn't anymore. I thought Christopher was an idiot for being blind to Janie's psychotic tendencies. Then too many coincidental accidents, the police come, and the book just stops. It was like the author said "Ok, I'm tired of writing this, you all just figure it out". Skip this one. I thought Erin Bennett did a good job tho. That was the only redeemable part of this book.

Revisado: 02-18-22
Loved everything about this book - in spite of the violent, crazy Rosie. She was an incredibly well-written character. All of them were. I just stumbled across this book and will look for more from this author and narrator. Plus I love a long book that keeps me engaged like this. Spend your credit and get it - it will make you cringe and hurt for these people and this family in many places, but you will love Tangy Mae and her perspective. The ending is satisfying but I wanted to know more. I wish I could rate Bahni Turpin 10 stars. Her inflections were spot-on!

Mark Scarbrough has been searching for something his entire life. Whether it’s his birth mother, true love, his purpose, or his sexual identity, Mark has been on a constant quest to find out who he really is, with the great Western texts as his steadfast companions. As a boy with his head constantly in a book, desperate to discover new worlds, he can hardly distinguish between their plots and his own reality.

Fun read!
Revisado: 02-16-22
I semi-sortof know the author and thus a little biased in my review. I got it that he was a major reader, book collector, and deep thinker, thus this book made sense to me. I was expecting more title-dropping but the ones he did drop as being most impactful in his life made sense. He actually made me laugh out loud a few times - that coach who semi-sortof pronounced vagina as pajama! OMG! Dallas, TX references & his strict, very proper 50s upbringing very interesting. Recording those cassettes! I really enjoyed this listen and his journey to where he is now, especially because he narrated it himself, was perfect! I knew "Miranda" and thought he described their life together very well. No, this is not a great work of western literature, but is a real-life peek into a real-life guy and his journey to happiness and self awareness. I loved it!

Historia
Bea and Awilda have been best friends from the moment Awilda threw her 14-year-old self across Bea’s twin-sized bed as if they had known each other forever. Bubbly, adventurous Awilda taught sheltered, shy Bea how to dress, wear her hair, and what to do with boys. She even introduced Bea to her husband, Lonnie, in college, who pledged to take good care of her for the rest of their lives. But philanderer Lonnie breaks that promise over and over again, leaving Bea to wrestle with her self-esteem and longtime secret addiction.

Revisado: 02-16-22
I love this author and narrator, and was on the wait list for this book, so was really looking forward to it. It was enjoyable BUT...several hours in I was like WTH is this about?! Entire chapters spent talking about mundane dinner conversations, thoughts to herself about her husband, how Bea & Awilda met. I just wanted to scream is this all there is?? FINALLY, the obvious happens and it was all so predictable!! However, I must say, the ending was satisfying. Would I recommend? Ehhhhh, not really. I love Robin Miles's voice tho and she was the only reason I kept listening.

Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

I'm halfway in and still can't figure out what it's supposed to be about. Too much trivia and nonsense and not enough story. Narration leaves much to be desired. Carmen's voice is is snarky and snotty. Okie sounds like he's trying to seduce her all the time. I keep waiting for it to pick up and be merry and bright, but it falls flat. The sample sounded fine. Hope I can get my credit back!

Revisado: 11-10-21
Like other reviews the lady slurped and swallowed and smacked her way thru the reading and kindof driving be me crazy. But her stories of her life were very interesting. How she stayed married to her insane husband is a big question, except that generation and position rarely divorced. What a baby!! And then his last will!! wow! Worth the read but not sure about the listen

This memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Julia Child embraced so wholeheartedly. Above all, she reveals the kind of spirit and determination, the sheer love of cooking, and the drive to share that with her fellow Americans that made her the extraordinary success she became.

Loved this book. Since I don’t speak French any bitched pronunciations were lost on me. Only wish Julia had read it herself in her distinctive voice. Made me want to cook!
