Historia
Nothing can mend a broken heart quite like family. Sherry has struggled all her life to understand who she is, where she comes from, and, most important, why her mother slapped her cheek one summer afternoon. The incident has haunted Sherry, and it causes her to dig into her family's past. Like many family histories, it is fractured and stubbornly reluctant to reveal its secrets. But Sherry is determined to know the full story. In a few days' time, her extended family will gather for a reunion, and Sherry sets off across the country with her mother, Dumpling, to join them.

Wow....absolutely loved this book!
Revisado: 12-17-23
So many people have generational traumas that they refuse to address. It leads to anger, resentment and broken families. This was a perfect story about how to try to understand your elders and why they passed down hurt through their offspring. The conversations in this book are not easy to have. Non stop page turner for me. Anyone that has experienced this in their families, can see themselves and their family members, in each character.

Warning...this is not a fairy tale
Revisado: 12-17-23
Although many readers are complaining about the open ending, I can understand why the reader was left suspended this way. In real life, most breakups leave one or both parties hurt and filled with questions that may never be answered. Closure isn't about getting all your questions answered. You may not even wanted the truth you are seeking. Closure and healing is a merry-go-round and it takes time. It isn't quick and painless. For Campbell, she needed her time to mourn. The first steps to true healing was the ending. Donovan may never be healed. He cannot depend on others to heal him. The sexual abuse experienced as a child can turn one into a cold monster or unfeeling robot. The temporary reprieve Campbell provided, was not a healing. Donovan came from weak and dysfunctional people. Not a surprise he did what he did. You cannot love someone out of their trauma. They have to be willing to fight to destroy those things holding them back from healing. This was a wonderful story that depicts the reality of life. Wonderful job by Ms. McFadden!

Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

Inspiring, Entertaining, Hilarious!!
Revisado: 02-03-23
I started listening with the expectation of a spectacular performance Jenifer MF Lewis style, and she didn't disappoint! Jennifer Lewis has always felt like the fun, over the top auntie I never had. She gives you all of that and more. She sings, she laughs, she cries as she reveals the most intimate details of her life, no hold barred! She isn't ashamed of her journey and is willing to give you the realistic version of herself as she tells of her life's ups and downs. Being a major fan of her work, there was never a dull moment in this book! I learned so much about her and myself! Every woman can find a piece of herself in Jenifer. I found myself inspired by her determination to succeed and the belief in herself. I loved listening to how she went from a self-absorbed diva to a wise elder that lovingly passes on nuggets of wisdom to each person willing to receive. She is black hollywood royalty, and I look forward to more of her work.

Spanning six decades of the 1800s, this mesmerizing story is a fictional biography of Marie Laveau - one of the most haunting characters in New Orleans’ history. Part of a long line of voodoo priestesses and healers, Marie tells of the mystery, passion, and violence that pattern her life. Like her grandmother, Marie sees visions from an early age. She never knew her mother, who practiced a spiritualism so potent she was murdered by those who feared her.

Narrator destroyed experience!
Revisado: 06-03-21
This book about was beautifully written but I could nto even enjoy it due to the contanst smacking and moist spit noises from the narrator. It sounded like he either kept a pice of candy in his mouth the entire time or he needs to give up reading anything aloud EVER AGAIN! I mean damn, do they actually losten to the recording before publishing?! It was extremely annoying like nails scraping a chalkboard! i will never listen to anything he ever narrates!

Historia
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

Thank You Henrietta!!!!
Revisado: 11-11-19
The Henrietta Lacks Story is absolutely breathtaking. Such incredible loss and sacrifice by her family, just so the world could benefit. I never knew who this woman was until I saw the trailer for the movie. I rushed to get the book before I saw the movie. At times I just cried my eyes out listening to all that was happening to Henrietta and her children. Rebecca Skloot did an excellent job capturing and retelling the story of a family whom has been through so much. Even though the science drenched portions were sometimes daunting, it too was an excellent break down of the scientific practices form the past and all of the legal ramifications that bridged our way to the modern practices we depend on now.

I read this book in high school and loved it then. But I enjoyed it a thousand times more with the legendary Ruby Dee as the narrator! Her voice expressed every emotion of every character. She brought every single character to life! I could listen to this book a few more times!

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Phenomenal!!!
Revisado: 02-21-19
I have this book at home and read it about 3 years ago. I decided to oreder it on audible to listen to while I drive. Just as the book was a page-turner, the audio version was also excellent. I love the way Robin Miles narrates. She never disappoints. The author did an amazing job with this book. I knew nothing of the Great Migration but this book brought many things to light. Wilkerson brought each character to life!!!! Could listen to this again and again.

Great Book
Revisado: 11-29-18
Angie Thomas did a wonderful job capturing the zeitgeist of our nation right now. The story was highly relatable due to all of the current officer involved shootings. Thomas made the story personal by and relatable by giving the mental, emotional and social breakdowns that take place in our communities when we have been victimized by the system. It also gives a joyful proclamation of a family's will to survive and rise from the ashes of destruction. The narrator did an amazing job....period! Her ability to switch tones and octaves with her voice, flawlessly giving each character their own voice, was nothing short of amazing. She made this book a thousand times more interesting to listen to instead of reading it myself.
