Historia
To trace the history of the twenty-first century so far is to trace a history of unaffordability and shortage. After years of refusing to build sufficient housing, America has a national housing crisis. After years of limiting immigration, we don’t have enough workers. Despite decades of being warned about the consequences of climate change, we haven’t built anything close to the clean-energy infrastructure we need. Ambitious public projects are finished late and over budget—if they are ever finished at all.

Big fan of the Ezra, but this...
Revisado: 03-23-25
While I largely agree on many matters with Klein, especially about the building muck,
he does, as is too often with liberal arts types, gets much wrong about the science. His story of the NIH et al is flawed and one of the huge reason "break throughs" have slowed is because the Science have gotten very complicated . There is a lot to know.

Historia
Timothy Snyder has been called “the leading interpreter of our dark times.” As a historian, he has given us startling reinterpretations of political collapse and mass killing. As a public intellectual, he has turned that knowledge toward counsel and prediction, working against authoritarianism here and abroad. His book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom. Now, in this tour de force of political philosophy, he helps us see exactly what we’re fighting for.

While Syder has some interesting and useful ideas, they get lost in the avalanche of words. And virtue signaling. This would have been better and more useful as a 12 page essay.

Historia
Americans in the twenty-first century are becoming increasingly untethered from both reality and the essential principles and traditions that have shaped the nation’s historic success. A big part of why America isn’t working is because far too many Americans neither know nor care how it’s supposed to work.

So near very good
Revisado: 08-27-24
While many of us will agree with Cooper's construction of much of the happenings in our country, he gives equal weight to missteps and grievances on both sides. But in reality the balance of wrong/bad actors is heavily weighted on one side and his denial of that detracts from reliance on his story.

Among the best at telling the story of science
Revisado: 08-23-24
As a biology major I was aware of much that Cech covers, but with the addition of much I did not know existed about RNA. Perhaps the best part is his descriptions of the visits, talks, papers, friends that actually drive basic science- it is a team sport.
The down mark is for the speaker who just murdered too many well-known bio words- very distracting.

Historia
In The Quiet Damage, celebrated reporter Jesselyn Cook unfolds the heartbreaking stories of five representative families from couples young and old to rural white parents to urban Black siblings, to show how QAnon shattered bonds once believed unbreakable. Cook paints a portrait of American suffering, of the vulnerabilities that have left people susceptible to outrageous theories promising order and control in a world where both are increasingly in short supply.

Cook spends a lot of time & words describing the life situations of the subjects of her inquiry. But the central reason of the book, why does this happen to nice people?, ends up obscured and nearly ineffable.

A better balance of the good news and the bad would actually make this more compelling. Not mentioned were the thousands of human lives spared from malaria in America by use of home spray with DDT. She championed the use of radiation to sterilize flies only a few chapters after telling us how awful & unpredictable the stuff was. Only at the very end did she point out that many people were on the pathway to producing the concept of IPA Integrated Pest Management so widely used today but beginning in the 1940s & 50s.

Looking forward to a book that explains life? Well, here it is! Explaining Life Through Evolution opens a window to the four billion year history of the millions of species we see on this planet. This book does not simply narrate the story of evolution: It brings to light who we are and where we came from.

Such a Disappointment
Revisado: 06-07-24
I was hoping for an update on the well known & widely accepted idea of Evolution. Instead we get a mishmash of anecdotal factoids with no central definition of Evolution and how we know what happened. A large segment deteriorates into virtue signaling in vaguely connected effects of genetics- better dealt with in a book on population genetics.
Seek other, much better books to explain what Evolution is, how it works, and how we think it is true.

Historia
In this book, we explore a narrative unfamiliar to many Christians. 16 verses are missing from modern Bible translations like the NIV, ESV, NASB, NLT, and CSB. These omissions raise critical questions about the integrity of scripture and what else might be missing. Advocates of the King James Version argue for their inclusion, suggesting that removing these verses might indicate manipulation. This book provides straightforward facts that anyone can access.

Revisado: 06-02-24
A very wordy example of the craft of obfuscation of the uncomfortable issue by believers. He probably does believe some of the stuff in the Bible, but as most, ignoring or denying the inconvenient stuff. This is a good example of that skill.

Historia
Abraham Lincoln grappled with the greatest crisis of democracy that has ever confronted the United States. While many books have been written about his temperament, judgment, and steady hand in guiding the country through the Civil War, we know less about Lincoln’s penetrating ideas and beliefs about democracy, which were every bit as important as his character in sustaining him through the crisis. Allen C. Guelzo, one of America’s foremost experts on Lincoln, captures the president’s firmly held belief that democracy was the greatest political achievement in human history.
