A story about a young artist with a kind soul coming of age on a Kentucky tobacco farm with her uncle. Love, family, and friendship are at the core of this sometimes painful and often beautiful story.

Richardson’s imagery is especially charming. I found myself delighted and amused by many of Ruby Lyn’s descriptions and sayings.

Beautiful and often painful. Tolstoy illustrates the human condition thoroughly through his characters while weaving in the struggles and fulfillment of love and faith.

Such a powerful read. It’s difficult to understand how/why our American society still faces many of the issues shared in Malcolm X’s account of his life. While listening to many parts of the book, it felt as though it could’ve been written this year.

Excellent story and performance! I thoroughly enjoyed the Russian history over the expanse of more than 30 years. The characters, though! Oh how I loved the characters. So rich and intriguing!

This book made me think. Though the language is accessible, it is a somewhat difficult read due to the subject matter. Alexander presents her message in a thoughtful and thorough manner. There were moments that seemed a bit biased; however, she often followed those moments with the counter argument or clarification that she was not condoning criminal behavior. I would recommend this book to anyone as an opportunity to open their minds and consider the issues of race that are present in America today.
