Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

Excellent!

What a great job Larson does of intertwining the stories of his major characters until they finally come together. Even though you already know what's going to happen to the ship, Larson keeps the suspense building. What a marvelous way to learn history.

Interesting Story
Revisado: 04-22-18
Lots of good background on horse breeds as the author builds up to the German's confiscation of animals for the Third Reich. At several points, the author seems to be padding the content by saying the same thing two or three different ways, but it is not bad enough to cause you to stop listening. The narrator has an odd way of saying the word "horses'" with elongation in the middle, but you get used to it. Also, good followup story after the war, so you get to hear what happened to the major players - two-legged and four-legged. This book will make you want to take a trip to Austria just to see the famous white stallions whose predecessors were rescued! Just imagine how sad if they had been lost.

Historia
Hillary Jordan's mesmerizing debut novel won the Bellwether Prize for fiction. A powerful piece of Southern literature, Mudbound takes on prejudice in its myriad forms on a Mississippi Delta farm in 1946. City girl Laura McAllen attempts to raise her family despite questionable decisions made by her husband. Tensions continue to rise when her brother-in-law and the son of a family of sharecroppers both return from WWII as changed men bearing the scars of combat.

Thought-provoking Story
Revisado: 04-04-18
What makes this story difficult to listen to is the vivid portrayal of discrimination and violence against black people that was so much a part of life, not only in the Mississippi Delta, but throughout the South for such a long time. It also paints a picture of women who were held in low regard at the time. The story is well written, the characters come alive, and the narration is wonderful. I recommend the book. It will remind you of how much more work has been done...and how much more needs to be done for equality and justice.

Historia
From the author of Through Animals' Eyes comes more true stories from the rare perspective of someone who not only cares for the animals she treats, but also has never wanted nor tried to tame or change them. Lynn Cuny founded Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation (WRR) in 1977 in her backyard in San Antonio. It has since grown to 187 acres and now rescues more than 7,000 animals annually and maintains an emergency hotline 365 days a year.

Fascinating stories of animal rescues
Revisado: 02-15-18
The stories in this book are wonderful and it is good to know that dedicated people are doing what they can to save wild animals and release them. Unfortunately, the author is not as good a reader as she is a rescuer. Her delivery made it difficult to keep listening and her "preaching" to people who are listening because they already believe in the importance of protecting animals was irritating. Still, it was good to meet the animals and hear their stories.

Historia
Entertaining and different, this is an enjoyable study of a flawed yet characterful Prince of Wales seen through the eyes of the women in his life. Edward Vll, who gave his name to the Edwardian Age and died in 1911, was King of England for the final 10 years of his life. He was 59 when at last he came to the throne. Known as Bertie, the eldest son of Victoria and Albert, he was bullied by both his parents.

Historia
Daniel Graham MacCormick - Mac for short - seems to have a pretty good life. At age 35 he's living in Key West, owner of a 42-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the army as an infantry officer, with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don't tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac's finances are more than a little shaky. One day Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West, contemplating his life....

Good Yarn with Several Weak Spots
Revisado: 11-01-17
DeMille tells a good story, but it was weakened by his hero's constant musings to himself (and, therefore, to the listener) about what would happen if the team could not get a boat to leave the island. One wondering thought I could understand; two, maybe; but it was just too obvious a threat to require further reminders. (We know you're on an island surrounded by potential enemies; its no secret!) Secondly, (spoiler alert) the hero and his lady find themselves in not one, not two, but three ferocious gun battles, and both escape without a scratch; not even a bullet nick to brag about. Finally, DeMille invents a whole new body of previously unmentioned enemies at the end just to muddle the mix. So, enjoy the yarn, enjoy the marvelous characters, enjoy the suspense....but don't expect too much.

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

You're gonna love Britt-Marie
Revisado: 06-25-17
Would you listen to Britt-Marie Was Here again? Why?
No. I rarely listen to or read books more than once. Too many other books and not enough time to enjoy them all.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Britt-Marie Was Here?
The opening chapters, when you are introduced to Britt-Marie and her eccentricities. You will find yourself chuckling at the way she makes other people adapt to her style.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. I laughed out loud several times
Any additional comments?
Backman does a good job of drawing you into Britt-Marie's view of the world and you find that you like her in spite of her oddities or maybe because of them.

Another Good One by Grisham
Revisado: 06-25-17
If you could sum up Camino Island in three words, what would they be?
A good read
What did you like best about this story?
The plot was well done; the characters, well drawn. You expect a surprise ending, but there isn't one and that's the surprise.
Which scene was your favorite?
When the cops finally got into the vault
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Nope
Any additional comments?
Grisham has a way of drawing you into his stories and making the plot and the characters interesting enough to keep you moving along. This one is not like some of his earlier works that were predictable and formulaic. Not as good as Gray Mountain, but still a good read.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

An amazing story, but not like the movie
Revisado: 03-14-17
Would you try another book from Margot Lee Shetterly and/or Robin Miles?
I would be more careful to understand what the author is writing about. I expected the book to be as fast-paced and dynamic as the movie. Instead, the exciting bits that fueled the movie and made it such a compelling story, visually, were few and far between. In this book, you get a broad look at segregation, including the hardships imposed on Black people, and you get a deep look at the space program and its scientific challenges, but the individual personalities of the female computers were lost in the mix. Interesting, informative and important writing in its own way, but not what I was expecting.
Was Hidden Figures worth the listening time?
Yes, for all of the reasons mentioned, above. But don't pick it up and expect it to have the pizzaz of the movie.

But the puppy’s willfulness challenged even Susannah, who had raised dogs for years.

Delightful story for dog lovers and the rest of us
Revisado: 03-14-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The story was a good one and delightfully told. Well-written mix of personal experience and factual information. Gives you a much better understanding of the amount of time and training is required to shape both a rescue dog and his or her handler. Many thanks to the people (and their dogs) who do this work!
What does Susannah Charleson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Hearing her read her own story made it feel like I was right there beside her on training missions and searches. She did a wonderful job of showing each dog as an individual with its own personality, likes and dislikes, as well as its competence in search and rescue.
