Historia
When Lydia takes a job running the Senior Citizens’ Social Club three afternoons a week, she assumes she’ll be spending her time drinking tea and playing gentle games of cards. The members of the Social Club, however, are not at all what Lydia was expecting. From Art, a failed actor turned kleptomaniac to Daphne, who has been hiding from her dark past for decades to Ruby, a Banksy-style knitter who gets revenge in yarn, these seniors look deceptively benign—but when age makes you invisible, secrets are so much easier to hide.

#1 Laugh Out Loud Listen
Revisado: 01-30-25
This is the absolute best, laugh out loud story ever. If you are or know a grumpy old man or woman, this book's for you. If your mobility isn't great and people seem to ignore you, channel the retired lady trucker who bumps people out of the way with her scooter. Wish you could get your close friend to really see how wonderful they are despite how their family treats them? Meet the pensioners' (retirees) social outing coordinator and the friends who champion her. Love Helen Mirren in the movie Red? Meet Daphne. She may or may not be a crack shot, but that doesn't matter. Watch out for her cane. The narrator is fabulous, the story is over the top with huge laughs bursting out at least every 20 minutes while you listen. Sometimes the laughter come so back-to-back that you just have to stop what you are doing and catch your breath. This is one of the three Audible books, all British humor, that pulled me out of despair in mid-January. It is a never-fail blues buster. Prepare to chortle and celebrate with the gang in an excellent epilogue.

Historia
Frank is a miserable old curmudgeon. An agoraphobic recluse and widower whose only company is the 'ghost' of his wife, Marcie. He is estranged from friends and family and is entirely cut off from the rest of the world. That is until he meets Red. Red is six years old. He's a funny, imaginative, and kind little boy who - following the separation of his parents - moves in next door. Red is fascinated by his new neighbour and seemingly oblivious to Frank's grumpy demeanour and strange ways.

Laugh Out Loud Therapy #2
Revisado: 01-30-25
Grumpy Old Men meets Dennis the Menace, in the UK. Don't listen to this book if you are not in a place where huge guffaws will disrupt your neighbors or family. Don't listen while attempting downward dog or you'll collapse in a heap of giggles. Don't listen to this book if a five-year-old repeating profanity heard once from a neighbor and blurted out at inopportune moments is offensive. The Irish lilt of the narrator is fantastic, the story is heart wrenching, rewarding, hysterical, and almost achingly satisfying when deep grief finally begins to ease. There is no Cinderealla ending, so it feels a bit more like real life. I can see Frank and Red in my neighbors, albeit without Frank's mouth. This is one of the three Audible books, all British humor, that pulled me out of despair in mid-January. Listen any time - multiple times!!! - when you need laughter therapy.

Historia
Kate is sick of being taken for granted by her husband Vince. It’s bad enough that she allowed herself to be dragged away from the London life she loved, but now she’s constantly compelled to keep up with the (very smug) Joneses in this small home counties town. She hates it here. What happened to the fun-loving woman she used to be? At almost 50 Kate feels lost, overlooked and like nothing is ever going to change. That is, until she comes home to an unexpected party – one that she has to cater. And that’s it. The final straw. Breaking point.

Strong women succeed in unusual careers
Revisado: 11-06-24
I listened to this for the second time on the eve of a tense election because I wanted a solid story with a hopeful ending. Once the Russian cousin enters the story, there are also laugh out loud moments. I know I will listen again because Sunflowers is now one of my go-to books to offset the blues. Even the author's note at the end is an encouraging story of overcoming challenges.

Historia
Crissy Dowling has created a world that suits her perfectly. She passes her days by the pool in a private cabana, she splurges on ice cream but never gains an ounce, and each evening she transforms into a Princess, performing her musical cabaret inspired by the life of the late Diana Spencer. Some might find her strange or even delusional, an American speaking with a British accent, hair feathered into a style thirty years old, living and working in a casino that has become a dated trash heap.

No likeable characters
Revisado: 03-31-24
I enjoy these narrators and wanted to love this book but half-way through, I unsuccessfully attempted to return it to Audible. I found nothing I could really admire or even like about any of the characters and I am a person who always roots for the underdog! This author's style of suspense creation and resolution works for many other readers and I would try another title after reading the reviews about the characters carefully. The premise was a good one and the writing is excellent. I just never clicked with Las Vegas, cryptocurrency, the social worker sister turned adoptive mom, the Princess Di impersonator, or the precocious teen girl. I had high hopes for the female characters when I read the summary and other reviews. What I discovered in the first half of the book were hints and partial sentences about all the ways they'd been beat down; there was never a glimmer of a better outcome for them by 'the end' to entice me to read further and see it come to fruition. With almost five hours left in the book and no way to return it, I am abandoning the ladies with a hope that readers with more stamina will see Betsy, Chrissy, and Marissa standing together on the last page.

History, romance, magic, kilts
Revisado: 08-12-17
What did you like best about this story?
This was an intriguing mix of history and romance with just a hint of magic. The characters are believable and their adventures plausible. The humor was perfect.
Any additional comments?
As soon as I finished the first book in the series, I bought the other two without even listening to the samples, and I'll look for others by this author. You won't want the stories to end!
