One of Herron’s best!

Herron has an amazing ability to build a story around minor characters from previous books , then weave it seamlessly into previous storylines. This book offers background into relationships that existed in his previous books, and a historical perspective of Slow Horses characters both living and dead. It’s an engaging stand alone book, but will be more meaningful if you have read or listened to his previous books.

Absolutely one of the most entertaining books I have ever read. The story is fast-moving and the characters are so well described I feel like I know them personally.

Engaging story and great narration. The descriptive writing makes you feel as though you are actually there watching the story take place. The narrarator’s interpretation of Roper’s voice is dead on!

If you like Le Carrie’s writing style then you will like this book. The story is engaging and less complex than many of his stories, with a timeline that is mostly linear. In typical Le Carre fashion, the character development is robust to the point that I think I would recognize any of them if I met them on the street. The accents are a bit confusing at first but you get used to it as the story progresses. The challenge is that in the story, very little of the dialog is in English so the accent is used to imply that the conversation is being conducted in German or Russian. After getting used to that, I think it works well to convey the storyline. Le Carre’s descriptions of the places in the story are very detailed making you fell like you are standing in the room listening to the scene as it unfolds, and feeling the stress and discomfort that the characters are feeling. I found the end of the story to be very abrupt, as if Le Carre had run out of paper or was faced with a deadline. After a very carefully developed story, the end seems to come as an unanticipated guillotine to the story, leaving several loose ends to be tied up by the reader. But aside from that, I found the audio book enjoyable and entertaining and would recommend it for a listening choice.

A departure into the private sector, Single and Single is an engaging race to the bottom to see who can be more sleazy, greedy, and corrupt, The story’s non-linear progression details the creation of a tangled web of lies and deception involving huge sums of money and murderous thugs. Only one unlikely person has the knowledge and motivation necessary to put an end to the criminal empire, but it may end up costing the lives of him and his family.

I have been reading lecarre’s books in sequence and this is the best so far. Reading the previous ones helps, you get more background on Smiley’s history with the different characters and the complicated story makes more sense.

This book is a little slow and plodding in places, unlike other Le Carré books.
