Historia
It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Revisado: 03-23-24
In a zombie apocalypse box set? Yeah, can you believe it? I so enjoyed this audiobook. I'm obviously not alone! I've read Bobby Adair from his first few books and in this series, I realized how much his writing matured into his very own unique voice, a la Stephen King.

This is an important book, if you like speculative fiction, dystopias on the edge of repair, and characters so complete you catch yourself wanting to Google their name for more .. oh.

Steven A. Sund, one of only ten men in history to hold the title of Chief of the US Capitol Police, has coordinated dozens of National Special Security Events, responded to numerous critical incidents and active shooter events, and has protected every living US president. But nothing could have prepared him for the violent attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

A very important book
Revisado: 02-14-23
To Mr Sund; thank you for putting yourself through the process of writing this book. I knew the Jan 6 committee refused to include the system and process failures in their report. Instead, they chose to prove detail by agonizing detail that Trump was was to blame for January 6, as if that weren't obvious.
But what they left out is Capitol & Metro police battled thousands of crazed Americans alone, for 3 hours, while DHS, the Pentagon and Congress looked on, having withheld intelligence from your officers and, when you desperately needed it, denied military assistance in case Donald Trump decided to use them and reinstall himself in a coup d'etat.
Then you get fired, your officers vilified and as a bonus you're all forced to bear official blame for intelligence and personnel failures.
I am truly sorry. All I can say is, may you be the victor who gets to write history, and your book, the real story of January 6.

Historia
The violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, was a terrible day for American democracy, but many people dared to hope that at least it would break the fever that had overcome the Republican Party and banish Trump's relentless lies about the stealing of the 2020 election. That is not what happened. Instead, “the big steal” has become dogma among an ever-higher percentage of American Republicans. What happened to the Republican Party, and America, during the Trump presidency is a story we more or less think we know.

If you had told me ...
Revisado: 10-30-22
... this book was about Paul Gosar and Marjory Taylor Greene, I would have saved my credit for the new Stephen King novel. The less I subject myself to their nonsense the better. But then, I would've missed out on a potentially prescient book about our American future.
I realized while reading this that MTG's success as a freshman Congressperson isn't a warning sign of something. She's who Americans want leading this nation, and that's how democracy rolls.
Shock is an indulgence our children and grandchildren cannot afford. It's too late to 'stop' her and her ilk from doing what they will with what it means to be an American. After the diagnosis, it's too late to stop the cancer.
The fight you bring against the reality of fascism is different than the resistance to it. We've lost our republic, at least for a while, and that doesn't dim once you close Twitter. We must admit it's lost in order to bring the right fight to take it back.

I love the ending
Revisado: 10-02-22
Before reading this last book in the series, I reread Tiamat's wrath. After finishing this last book, I still wasn't quite done so I started over from Leviathan Wakes and just now, finished the whole series again.
The genius, from my perspective, is the authors' creation of characters so convincing they still surprised me the second time through. I can forgive an awkward ending in exchange for genius that creates real people that never existed. But, I didn't have to. I won't spoil it, but my favorite character (positive I am not alone in this) was there to wave me off and I grin each time I think of it.
To the authors: Thank you for such an enjoyable ride.

Historia
The Reckoning will examine America’s national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration’s corrupt and immoral policies. Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD - a new leader alone cannot fix us.

So that's why ...
Revisado: 06-21-20
I started off with a 4 star 'over all', but changed my mind after I finished my review. I wanted more "OK, but now what??" In thinking it through, the solution is not rocket science.
If you're baffled by how they gain power while becoming increasingly incoherent, you'll finish this book saying "so that's why." You'll also realize they can only go on doing what they do as long as Americans continue to believe they still something they are not; a conservative political party with things like policy agendas for immigration, health care, foreign policy, or even the economy.
If you're a citizen like me who didn't pay much attention until 2016, this book does a few things at once while telling a story I had a hard time putting down. It's not remotely partisan or an 'attack' on conservative policies or legislation -- rather, it exposes the fact there hasn't been any except for culture war gestures and use of certain radio and cable punditry to completely overwhelm the American narrative. As I read this book, it hit me that most of what I recall of politics over the last 15 years (and me not looking too deeply) is Republican generated narrative. The failures of Obamacare, Democrats wasting government money, 'the fiscal cliff' we were all gonna die from, and so on.
Most of all I want to acknowledge what's happened to America isn't bad luck, MAGAs or Russians. Those of us who weren't paying attention, feeling all good we had an African American president and stuff, not looking deeper, not VOTING in midterms, or even questioning how both parties were just as bad as the other -- we let this current crop of opportunistic grifters take over.
This book is about how politics and government works, and you'll get insights into that as you read. You'll get a better idea of what kind of politician to get behind, whatever your partisan affinity is. Not because the author TELLS you, but because he doesn't. He just tells the story of what's been happening all this time, beneath our awareness.
As for the 'Now what?' ... as I write, maybe we don't need any more direction than to vote in every election, and stop wishing for an exciting charismatic candidate. Expect at least moderate wonk. Expect answers. Expect expertise.

Historia
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

We've met the enemy, and it is us
Revisado: 07-25-19
This isn't a 'mea culpa' or a bashing of the Republican party at all. It's the story of Americans, in particular, a subset of those who tended to vote for the GOP over the years. This book is about how the Republican party pols, like Paul Ryan, John Boehner and even the late John McCain found themselves alarmingly out of step with the voters once so loyal to them.
It's also about the Republican pols like Michelle Bachman and Tim Huelskamp, who were very much in step with the evolving GOP voter base, They and other like-minded 'fiscal conservatives' (think Freedom caucus) listened closely to their constituents, indulged their requests and requirements, and midwifed them forth to their natural, logical result -- the election of Donald Trump.
It's about the Democrats and Burkian Republicans who, puzzled but mostly clueless, kept on doing what they always did, over and over again one day they were the bad guys, the 'elites' engineering the multicultural globalist take-over, who turned their backs on true Americans.
Donald Trump was the only real choice for what's become of the GOP. He is bringing them out of the desert and restoring them to their rightful stations as we speak.
This book is definitely above average in its exploding cohort of political non-fiction. I doubt a Rand Paul or Trump devotee will agree, but if you are a casualty of the current administration, and you need a more in-depth explanation than "GOP + Trump = evil bad!!", this book will take you there. I read a lot (ie, too much) political non fiction, but this one is what I was looking for. And no, I was not given a free copy to promo, I honestly mean it.
