Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. Historia
Years ago, Beth Lathrop and her sister Kate suffered what they thought would be the worst tragedy of their lives the night both the famous painting Moonlight and their mother were taken. The detective assigned to the case, Conor Reid, swore to protect the sisters from then on. Beth moved on, throwing herself fully into the art world, running the family gallery, and raising a beautiful daughter with her husband Pete. Kate, instead, retreated into herself and took to the skies as a pilot, always on the run.

Snore...
Revisado: 03-17-20
Rice is a bestselling author? I'm not sure how that happened, but it wasn't with this book. The story was boring and loaded with extraneous information that went nowhere. Other people already complained about "she said, he said" and yes, that was super annoying and reminded me of how elementary school children write. I'm just completely disappointed and shocked about it. I expected better.

Historia
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

Would Make a Great Movie
Revisado: 03-11-20
Great piece of historical fiction. Compelling, insightful, and easy to tell who was speaking in dialog, thanks to Bramhall's German and French accents. Would love to see this in film.

Historia
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

Eye-Opening MUST READ (listen)!
Revisado: 02-24-20
This man risked his life and his family's lives to tell us what life was and still is like in North Korea. If you Google images for North Korea, all you see are photos of Kim Jong Un and his family, with a few shots of people who are obviously living the lives of kings and queens. You don't see average citizens, like the author, who live in squalor. The rules, laws, and lack of food and medicine in this country will shock you. The translation of this autobiography is beautiful and captures the author's heart, as does the amazing narration.

Historia
Josie Bianci was killed years ago on a train during a terrorist attack. Gone forever. It’s what her sister, Kit, an ER doctor in Santa Cruz, has always believed. Yet all it takes is a few heart-wrenching seconds to upend Kit’s world. Live coverage of a club fire in Auckland has captured the image of a woman stumbling through the smoke and debris. Her resemblance to Josie is unbelievable. And unmistakable. With it comes a flood of emotions - grief, loss, and anger - that Kit finally has a chance to put to rest: by finding the sister who’s been living a lie.

It's OK - Not what others had me expecting.
Revisado: 02-11-20
It's like a chick flick, and despite my female gender, I'm not a huge fan because they are so predictable. But if that's your thing, then you'll like it. I was expecting to be more surprised and moved by the story, and the narrator kept slipping out of the New Zealand accent when voicing the one character, so I sometimes forgot who was talking.

Awesome story with lots of surprises and a great ending. The narration was spot-on as well, and I'm pretty picky about that.

Interesting Story, Cringey Narration
Revisado: 01-23-20
Although the story is predictable, the questions of who did what to whom and why are not answered until the end, so it's an exciting read. However, the narration is frustrating. She speaks so slowly that I had to speed it up x 1.5 to sound normal, and she sounds like a British or Australian person trying to fake an American accent. Unfortunately, she still doesn't pronounce "been," "again," or "against" properly, and sometimes her "proper English" slips through completely. It is so annoying that I had to stop listening, even though I wanted to find out what happens in the book. I don't understand why a narrator would do that.

Perfect for any holiday, this well-narrated, well-written novella has all the family drama of real life followed by a feel-good ending of hope. Would make an excellent play at a dinner theater.

Historia
Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn’t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.

Tedious
Revisado: 11-18-19
If you like long descriptions of things that don't really matter (the way a feather looks, for example), this will be a good book, especially if you liked Little House on the Prairie. For me, the book is very tedious for what ends up being a very anti-climactic end. I didn't care for the narrator's character voices either. She had the same tone for each character, as if the character's personality and feelings never varied or changed as they matured emotionally.
