an excellent performance marred by dodgy equipment

I loved this novella when I first read it, and Ryan Reed does an excellent job at making the main character punchably-yet-likeably smug. the downside is. Sarah Krause's usually solid performance is ruined by a very poor microphone that sounds like she recorded her lines on a cheap phone. not enough to ruin it, and I plan to listen to this one again many times in the future, but it's always going to bug me.

this author has a reputation for bringing cyberpunk out of the neon-soaked and synthwave-drenched depths of decadent depravity that it's been in for too many years and returns it to the gritty neo-noir of its origins. a worthy successor to Gibson.

Far, far better than the movie

it really seems to me the Star Wars franchise ought to have left movies behind long ago. can't fit a full story into a film so often, and this leaves out the most objectionable parts of the third movie while expanding upon many details left vague.

Not great but not terrible. Guessed the big plot twist before the story got to it. Went in an interesting direction in parts, but the story as a whole could have used some trimming.

i went into this expecting a softer and gentler story, something more in line with the original tv series, and instead, my ears received blood and death and twists aplenty.

i strongly recommend this.

the information was little you couldn't find elsewhere, but no less valuable as a history of occultism. of special note was the brief moment where the narrator briefly broke his scholarly tone to describe Aleister Crowley as an ass.

a promising start

I come to the works of Joe Abercrombie as something of an expat from GRRM, seeking a similar level of grit and moral ambiguity and a general sense of cynicism. I think I've made a good investment in this series.

Steven Pacey does an admirable job of ensuring as many characters as possible sound as distinct as possible, with highlights including Arch-Lector Sult sounding quite a bit like Patrick Stewart, as well as giving Glokta a markedly different diction for his inner monologue compared to his speech.
