Historia
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Revisado: 05-22-16
It was a lovely book. A page-turner, if I could say so for an audio book. It certainly gets you hooked. The only one thing that irks me is the fact that there are so few female characters, and the ones there, are uninteresting and unintelligent.
The narrator's awesome, though, I find myself trying to speak like him after listening to this book.

Historia
Christmas 1913: In Britain, people are debating a new dance called ‘the tango’. In Germany, they are fascinated by the wedding of the Kaiser’s daughter to the Duke of Brunswick. Little did they know that their world was on ‘The Eve of War’, a catastrophe that was to engulf the continent, cost millions of lives, and change the course of the century. And yet behind the scenes, the Great Powers were marching towards what they thought was an inevitable conflict.

Mediocre, neither good nor bad
Revisado: 06-09-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I wouldn't say it was a waste of time, but it wasn't terribly enjoyable, either.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Something with a lighter subject, perhaps.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christopher Oxford?
I don't know enough about narrators to answer this question.
Did 1913 inspire you to do anything?
It inspired me to avoid books narrated by Christopher Oxford.
Any additional comments?
I will probably keep it I the library, but may not ever listen to it again.

Historia
When Doug Mack picked up a 1963 edition of Europe on Five Dollars a Day, he stumbled on an inspired idea: to boldly go where millions have gone before, relying only on the advice of a travel guide that's nearly a half century out-of-date. Add to the mix his mother's much- documented grand tour through Europe in the late 1960s, and the result is a funny and fascinating journey into a new (old) world, and a disarming look at the ways the classic tourist experience has changed- and has not-in the last generation.

Sad sap worked
Revisado: 04-21-15
It is comforting to hear another person's supposedly life-changing trip not penning out as expected, his disappointment and delights on the road echoing mine. Davis Skeist's sappy performance worked for Doug Mack's melancholic and often times melodramatic prose.

Historia
There has never been a craze like Beanie Babies. The $5 beanbag animals with names like Seaweed the Otter and Gigi the Poodle drove millions of Americans into a greed-fueled frenzy as they chased the rarest Beanie Babies, whose values escalated weekly in the late 1990s. A single Beanie Baby sold for $10,000, and on eBay the animals comprised 10 percent of all sales.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 03-18-15
I hesitated buying the item when I listened to the sample. I felt that the narrator was over annunciating every word. I bought it anyway because of the interesting subject matter. Being a teen in the 1990's I remember the Beanie Babies craze well. This book certainly brought back a lot of memories although I had never owned a Beanie myself.
I like the author's in depth profiling of the father of the Beanies, Ty Warner. His portrayal of Warner, though jerk-like at first, ultimately showed him as a smart yet flawed human being. Luckily, I was able to get past the rigid narration and enjoyed the book.

Historia
Pink and pretty or predatory and hardened, sexualized girlhood influences our daughters from infancy onward, telling them that how a girl looks matters more than who she is. Somewhere between the exhilarating rise of Girl Power in the 1990s and today, the pursuit of physical perfection has been recast as a source - the source - of female empowerment. And commercialization has spread the message faster and farther, reaching girls at ever-younger ages.

Nice surprise
Revisado: 03-13-15
I was pleasantly surprised by the author's decision to invite her daughter to read the credit at the end, as this book is a documentation of the difficulties the author faces when raising a daughter in this world of ours. Talk about giving girls a voice! I also can't wait to hear what Peggy Orenstein thinks of Miley Cyrus now!

Finally read/listened to this book
Revisado: 02-01-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Nickel and Dimed to be better than the print version?
Don't think I am qualified to answer this question as I have not got the print version.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Nickel and Dimed?
When one of the people she worked with was my namesake. Yes, I know those were fake names, but still.
Which scene was your favorite?
Not really a scene, but when Ehrenreich wrote that all the people she met in the course of writing this book took pride in what their job, no one was a slob or a slacker. That really moved me.

Henry VIII’s Wives: History in an Hour will introduce you to these six entirely diverse and captivating personalities and the events that propelled them to their individual fates.

Was Henry VIII’s Wives: History in an Hour worth the listening time?
Yes. Love these "History in an Hour" books.

Historia
Organized as a travel guide for the time-hopping tourist, The Time-Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England is an entertaining popular history with a twist. Historian Ian Mortimer reveals in delightful (and occasionally disturbing) detail how the streets and homes of 16th century looked, sounded, and smelled for both peasants and for royals; what people wore and ate; how they were punished for crimes and treated for diseases; and the complex and contradictory Elizabethan attitudes toward violence, class, sex, and religion.

Disappointing
Revisado: 12-14-14
I previously bought and listened to Ian Mortimer's "The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century" and liked it enough to want to buy another one by the same author, thinking that it would be just as enjoyable. Unfortunately I was mistaken. Mortimer somehow managed to strip away the fun bits that made "Medieval England" great, but retained what made it boring, to create "Elizabethan England." I could not get through the tedium of the list upon list of mundane items that the author seemed to enjoy putting in the book. They seemed to serve no purpose but to show that the author had researched and found those lists. To say the least, this did not prepare me for a visit to Elizabethan England at all.
I don't think I have listened to one entire chapter in this book.

Unexpectedly comical
Revisado: 10-18-14
I love the History in an Hour series and I love the narrator Jonathan Keeble, but this time I have to say I like his performance less than those in the other books. His impression of JFK was strange at first, and increasingly ridiculous and hard to stomach as the book progressed.

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Glad to have bought this classic
Revisado: 10-18-14
I have always assumed that I had finished reading Dracula in the past, but I realised I hadn't. I am glad I finally did, albeit in audio form. It was a star-studded cast, and the way Stoker wrote the book lent itself very easily to have one person reading from one document written by one character. Unfortunately, that also meant that everyone was doing everyone else's impression, because a large portion of everyone's letter/diary contained a great deal of direct quotes. It was rather comical to hear five different actors trying to do Van Helsing's Dutch accent!
