I love everything David Sedaris writes. I was dissapointed that so much of the book was previously published in The New Yorker though.

I enjoyed the story about his father's inappropriate behavior. I know that's horrible to say, but I've been reading his books since he was just breaking out in the 90s, and while he is a master of self depreciation, I've always sensed huge intentional gaps about his family dynamic. Obviously, the family has a right to their privacy, so I truly appreciate his willingness to share such difficult topics with us all.

I miss stories about his mother. It is clear in his essays that he loved her so deeply, and even when he relays negative details he does it with such care and delicacy. I enjoy her stories immensely.

Author means well

So much garbage science to weed through here. I think intermittent fasting deserves more research, but this book doesn't cover good research at all. Much of the author's claims are completely untrue or disproven, including the claim that body's natural state is running on a zero to low carb diet. The author even states that after a very extended fast, he actually lost zero muscle tissue. Just ridiculous

A devilish treat!

Ms. Peter's is a highly underrated comedian and also a master of one-liner delivery. I remember staying up late to watch her original show back in the 80s, and her Mistress of the Dark movie is a cult classic I watched every October when I was growing up. My whole family thought she was hysterical, and since we all had widely different tastes in movies, that was saying something. Her narration doesn't dissapoint here either.

I love that she shared so much of her life with all of us, and what an amazing, adventurous life she's had. She could write separate books about each decade of her life and they'd all be interesting.

Humble, brave, insightful, and determined all describe this woman. Such a good read!

Shirley Jackson's abusive relationships with her husband and mother were massive contributing factor to her life and work, as well as her mental and physical health. All of that is omitted here, very much like reading the society column instead of the front page when world War III has been declared

A great summary of this theory or concept. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a difficult relationship with their parents.

Flat predictable characters

Character development just lacking for everyone. You don't ever develop a connection to the main character, or care that a ghost is chasing him.

A lot of misogynistic imagery. Ridiculous premise. References to awful, dated, mainstream rock music throughout. I thought it was hilarious at one point to think an old nurse taking care of the main character's father would be listening to Cold Play.

The story was so meandering. I guess it's good to be Stephen King's son. You can write weak tea versions of HIS misogynistic, meandering prose and make millions at it.
