Historia
Before you can achieve anything in life, you need a solid foundation of self-discipline. Talent, intelligence, and skill are only a part of the equation. Positive thinking, affirmations, and vision boards are only a part of the equation. If you want to turn your dreams into reality, you need self-discipline. Self-discipline is what will keep you focused when all hell is breaking loose, and it looks like you are one step away from failure.

Good self-help summary, AI-sounding narration
Revisado: 11-13-24
This book was decent. If you’re familiar with the self-help genre, there’s nothing in here you haven’t read elsewhere. It reads like an aggregated summary of a bunch of other books I’ve read.
There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s a good reminder, but don’t expect new insights.
I didn’t like the narration. It sounded stilted and robotic. I’d recommend listening to a sample before you buy.

Her tracks now–as she carried away the girl–led into the wilderness of rocks, some acres in extent, where the going was both difficult and dangerous. The cracks and chasms in between the rocks were masked with ferns, blackberry vines, and a false step, which might easily have resulted in a broken limb, would have been fatal.

Simply astonishing
Revisado: 03-29-24
What a fantastic book. Jim Corbett…they don’t make ‘em like that any more. The stories of tiger hunter were as harrowing as they were hard to believe, but what pleasantly surprised me was the deep respect Jim clearly had for both the animals he hunted and the villagers he lived and worked with. There was a refreshing absence of the colonial sentiments that infuse a lot of other autobiographies from this period.

Historia
George Smiley is no one's idea of a spy - which is perhaps why he's such a natural. But Smiley apparently made a mistake. After a routine security interview, he concluded that the affable Samuel Fennan had nothing to hide. Why, then, did the man from the Foreign Office shoot himself in the head only hours later? Or did he? The heart-stopping tale of intrigue that launched both novelist and spy, Call for the Dead is an essential introduction to le Carre's chillingly amoral universe.

Incredible writing, scintillating performance
Revisado: 12-27-23
This is my second Le Carré book. His writing is a pleasure to read—the way he weaves philosophy, literature, politics, and psychology together in less words than you think would be possible. The fact that it’s a great story too is almost just a bonus.
The performance by Michael Jayston is one of the best I’ve heard.

If you are struggling with depression and want to understand what’s going on, or if you have a loved one who is, read this book.
Wise, validating, and hopeful. One of the best, if not the best self help books I’ve ever read.

I didn’t enjoy this outing as much as the full length novels I’ve listened to on here.
Richard Armitage did a fantastic job narrating as usual.

Not as good as his others
Revisado: 07-30-22
I love Steven Pressfield. The War of Art and Turning Pro are some of the most important and helpful books I’ve read. The Artist’s Journey fell short for me. His central thesis of the artist’s journey as separate from the hero’s journey was muddled to me. There are some good passages in here, but it’s not his best or most coherent work on the artist’s life.

Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Revisado: 05-29-22
Yes, it doesn’t have a lot of specific investing strategies, but that’s not what this book is about. It’s about the often counterintuitive principles and realities you need to understand if you want to behave in a way that will allow you create, keep, and enjoy more money.

Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with a urgent cry for help. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly dug open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death.

Not Arthur Conan Doyle, but…
Revisado: 05-05-22
This was my second Agatha Christie book. It’s clear how much inspiration she drew from Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, and having listened to the entire 6-part series on Audible, I can say that this isn’t on that level.
Still enjoyable, and Richard Armitage does a wonderful performance.
