Six years after a virus wiped out most of the planet’s population, former pop star Moira is living under a new identity to escape her past. Desperate for a fresh start herself, jaded event planner Krista navigates the world for those still too traumatized to go outside, but she never reaches out on her own behalf. Rob has tried to protect his daughter, Sunny, by keeping a heartbreaking secret, but when strict government rules threaten to separate parent and child, Rob needs to prove himself worthy in the city’s eyes by connecting with people again.

our future?
Revisado: 07-26-20
The story that unfolds throughout this book is interesting. All the characters are likeable and well fleshed out. Each comes with their own baggage and somehow they all come together for the sake of a child.
What I found most fascinating about this book, though, was the society portrayed after a global pandemic. Was Mike Chen psychic when he started writing this book? Obviously, this is not a record of the current COVID pandemic, but there are definitely ideas about how society functions post pandemic that provide food for thought.
The narration was generally good, with different characters clearly distinguished, although Moira's British accent wanders around a little, but not so much that it is is disturbing. I'm not sure about the breathiness in the general narration- that became a little grating, and is the reason for 4 out of 5 stars.

Historia
Agnes Hussein, descendant of the last sultan of Singapore and the last surviving member of her immediate family, has grown up among her eccentric relatives in the crumbling Kampong Glam palace, a once-opulent relic given to her family in exchange for handing over Singapore to the British. Now Agnes is seventeen and her family has fallen into genteel poverty, surviving on her grandfather’s pension and the meager income they receive from a varied cast of boarders.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-26-16
Would you try another book from Liz Rosenberg and/or Amy McFadden?
Amy McFadden did a decent job, although there were definitely "local" words where she was guessing pronunciation. I honestly got the feeling that Liz Rosenberg had never really been to Singapore, or really didn't understand how historical fiction shouldn't be written using a contemporary voice.
Has The Moonlight Palace turned you off from other books in this genre?
I love historical fiction- I had great hopes for this book as an expat living in Singapore. I thought I would learn something about this country's history, but this was a tale that could have been set anywhere. In terms of historical fiction, this was some of the worst of the genre.
Did Amy McFadden do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, Amy McFadden was great at doing different accents.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I wouldn't see this book as a movie- that being said, the book is almost written in hollywood style.
Any additional comments?
I was so disappointed in this book. I have lived in Singapore for a number of years and I LOVE historical fiction. I thought this would be the perfect combination for me. But it was a SLOG to get through this. The first chapter was the most interesting. It was the only really "historical" aspect of this book. Supposedly set in the 1920s, the main character's voice was entirely 2000's sassy. I sincerely question a lot of the history of this book- I honestly got the feel that the author had spent 2 days in Singapore and thought "that's a good idea for a story!". It is written more as a teenage romance than a historical fiction. I never usually write reviews, but I read so many positive reviews before buying this book that I felt I had to put in my opinion!

Historia
I met Jamie Fraser when I was 19 years old. He was tall, redheaded, and, at our first meeting at least, a virgin. I fell in love hard, fast, and completely. He knew how to ride a horse, wield a sword, and stitch a wound. He was, in fact, the perfect man. That he was fictional hardly entered into it.

riding on coat tails
Revisado: 09-29-15
Lovers of the Outlander series might be drawn to this book, however this book lacks any sophistication in writing. It reads as something a high school student has written; it's simplistic, predictable and weak. It's not even particularly romantic. Or believable. The author of this book alludes to Diana Gabaldon throughout, calling her, "herself" and revering her writing. And yet KC Dyer, doesn't even come close, making me wonder if legal teams were involved in blocking the use of "herself's" name.
And that's just the story. The narrator's voice is annoying, and her accents are laughable. They are so not even close to Scots.
I gave it 2 stars as I was able to listen to it all the way to then end, and there have been other books that I haven't.

Worst Doctor Story EVER
Revisado: 10-15-13
I couldn't even be bothered finishing this one. I have purchased over 70 doctor who audios and this was the worst one ever. Francis Barber is not a good narrator...her American accent is hideous- involves shouting and really OTT accent. Story is boring and repetitive. The writer seems to want to take the Doctor and Clara's relationship somewhere other than what is in the TV series (constant bickering, and I wanted to slap Clara) Waste of money. Don't do it.

poor story
Revisado: 04-02-12
A shame, as I like any of the doctor who audios narrated by nicholas briggs, but this was just a really bad story. It skipped around everywhere and barely made any sense. I found I really didn't care about any of the characters, and the companions seemed like an after thought. I have bought one other oli smith story which I didn't like either. I must remember to give him a miss next time.

Historia
The past is like a foreign country: nice to visit, but you really wouldn’t want to live there. In 2003, Rebecca Whitaker died in a road accident. Her husband, Mark, is still grieving. He receives a battered envelope, posted eight years ago, containing a set of instructions with a simple message: "You can save her." As Mark is given the chance to save Rebecca, it’s up to the Doctor, Amy, and Rory to save the whole world. Because this time the Weeping Angels are using history itself as a weapon.

Really intriguing story
Revisado: 03-26-12
I buy these audio books for myself and my kids. I have to say that I don't know if my kids will enjoy this story as much, but I loved it. The angels are back, but in a new way. I really wanted to find out what would happen next, and "couldn't put it down". Clare Corbett does a really good job narrating. I will be listening to this one again.

Really good story
Revisado: 11-29-11
I enjoyed this so much. Nicholas Briggs is a fantastic narrator (some of my favourite Doctor who audio books are done by him) and he does Christopher Ecclestone so well. It was nice to have a 9th doctor audiobook. The story is really good- like a murder mystery.

More for kids
Revisado: 12-06-10
As an adult, I love the Doctor Who audio books, even though they say they are aimed at kids. This one, with badger headed creatures some how seemed more child like. Freema Agyeman also lacks the ability to do the many different voices that other narrators are capable of. She does a decent 10th doctor though.
