Historia
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

A clear presentation of how democracies and democratic principles are systematically undermined in the 21st century.
Revisado: 03-30-25
Applebaum is excellent at supplying numerous examples in modern history of how the modern world is no longer playing by the 20th century ideas and has devolved into Democratic and Anti-Democratic authoritarians.
The authoritarians know that when liberal democracies succeed, their power is undermined and threatened at home and globally. Consequently they find it necessary (and efficient) to divide Western civilization at every turn.
Applebaum shows how they cooperate with each other (despite radically different ideologies) to avoid accountability AND find co-conspirators inside democracies that are willing to help dismantle institutions and evade laws in exchange for personal wealth and power. A Must Read for every citizen of any state!

Historia
The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

A MUST READ for every American patriot!
Revisado: 02-23-25
It is short (maybe just terse and focused). Mr Snyder lays out the lessons from actual history that are frighteningly accurate to our current situation. We are sleepwalking into tyranny again, and calling it “conservative values”. History doesn’t repeat but is infinitely instructive when you see the same techniques of Fascist, Communist, and Religious dictators working to rule without barriers. 🇺🇸

Historia
This book shifts the paradigm around grit away from accomplishments to a far more attainable and pleasing end: life satisfaction, which results in a deep, abiding, and overarching sense of contentment with life. A Practical Approach to Life Satisfaction argues that constantly striving to pursue accolades is more likely to drive individuals into the ground instead of leading them to fulfillment. However, when grit works together with emotional intelligence, it can yield marked improvements in life satisfaction.

The title sounded good, but…
Revisado: 05-20-23
I love and appreciate the thorough and scientifically sound approach to contemporary positive psychology and expect some background in a good self-help presentation. Dr Ott could have completely left out chapter 2 (of which there were parts 1 through 3 constituting 3 hours of superfluous self-indulgence). I appreciate personal background and direct experience as well as rigorous scientific testing, but geez! Let me save you the money and more importantly the time… learn about yourself through the tools of emotional intelligence and Duckworth’s work on ‘Grit’ or perseverance and perspective-taking and you’ll be happier with your lot and life. DONE!

Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Great content, poor recording
Revisado: 08-26-22
This book is actually really…GOOD! Faith explains the best evidence-based solutions and treatments for Anxiety/Depression-centered issues with humor and simplicity. I gained many insights into concepts poorly explained in other similar self-help books.
No joke, it’s right to the point. The chapter about ‘complementary/alternative’ treatment was still a little too woo, but that’s my only complaint as far as content and delivery (she reads the book herself). I liked her no-BS tell-it-like it is style.
Unfortunately she either recorded it herself in her 10x12’ office, or let someone who doesn’t know shit about voice recording produce it. This sucks because her delivery (performance) and the material (writing/content) is spot-on! This is probably why Audible made it a ‘free’ book with your membership. It’s not a dealbreaker, but you may have to occasionally rewind to understand what she just said (this is why people with audio recording/production knowledge get paid).

The Happiness Hypothesis

Historia
Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the listener with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation.

So good I had to listen twice !
Revisado: 02-19-22
Was planning on listening to “The Righteous Mind”, but this was on sale so I took a chance. I’m glad I did, because it brought together so many concepts that I’ve been contemplating. Haidt weaves scientific methodology with many cross-cultural insights from world religious thought to reveal what can be said to be true about individual and collective felicity (happiness) and how we can all capitalize on those principles while understanding the diversity and division of perspective in human beings.

Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

Superb Content, Annoying Narration
Revisado: 01-12-22
After finishing the audiobook, I’m wondering if Cary Elwes, Seth MacFarlane and Ann Druyan were the actual narrators. I don’t remember any voice that seems like Ann Druyan (Carl’s wife and Co-Author). There was a section that I could believe was Seth MacFarlane, but if the greatest majority of the narration was Cary Elwes, then his British accent was far more indecipherable than any performance in his movies. I ended up repeatedly rewinding because I couldn’t understand a word or term and was missing the meaning of what I knew to be important information.
That’s a serious shame, as this is THE book that needs to be read by everyone in the 21st century to prevent the widespread misinformation and in-group credulity that undermine self-determination and the advancement of humanity because too many of us have become intellectually/socially lazy and are lulled into tribal complacency with ‘bread and circuses’.

Historia
Renowned social psychologists Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson take a compelling look into how the brain is wired for self-justification. When we make mistakes, we must calm the cognitive dissonance that jars our feelings of self-worth. And so we create fictions that absolve us of responsibility, restoring our belief that we are smart, moral, and right - a belief that often keeps us on a course that is dumb, immoral, and wrong. Backed by years of research and delivered in energetic prose, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) offers a fascinating explanation of self-deception.

Great Insight for being a Human
Revisado: 02-16-21
The authors are the researchers, which is nice because despite their best efforts bookwriters can’t know the material as intimately as the scientists. Researchers aren’t always the best communicators, but luckily Tavris and Aronson are. Human motivation and our unconscious self-rationalization is completely natural AND completely ruinous individually and as societies. The book takes you through personal, legal, political and societal pitfalls that are all too common and also MUST be acknowledged in order to make better decisions in our relationships and collectively. The 2020 revision is highly recommended. Please read and share.

Historia
Challenging leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. How can it be possible that the world we see is not objective reality? And how can our senses be useful if they are not communicating the truth? Hoffman grapples with these questions and more over the course of this eye-opening work.

Fantastic content, but get it somewhere else!
Revisado: 10-01-19
After listening to Dawkins’ “The Selfish Gene” this will really enlighten you. There are numerous allusions to “The accompanying PDF”, which Audible apparently didn’t buy the right to. Too bad, because Hoffman makes a compelling case for the fact that we assume our perceptions and conceptions are “reality”. Love the book, disappointed in Audible!
