The ads enthused, "The virtual lands of Mirror World await you! Live out your most secret dreams in our world of Sword and Sorcery! Become a Great Wizard or a Famous Warrior! Build your own castle, tame a dragon, conquer a kingdom! All those desperate, lonely, and insecure - Mirror World offers you a chance!" But Oleg isn't meant to become a great wizard or a famous warrior. He'll never have a castle of his own. Nor will he ever tame a dragon. And he's definitely not the type to conquer a kingdom, however virtual it may be.

Historia
Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early 20th century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. "A place", he said, "where learning is a game." Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym "Truly, Devious".

to be continued...
Revisado: 02-07-21
three words that should never show up at the end of a novel.
unlike tv, books don't have a fixed length. so they can, and should, reach a proper conclusion.
in a novel, "To be continued" is the mark of a writer who doesn't trust the strength of their writing and count on the "cliffhanger" to get people to buy the next book.
the thing is that even with a cliffhanger, a novel still needs to conclude. the book must have one plotline (a fairly major one) come to a satisfying conclusion before you can put the cliffhanger. A Cliffhanger must be earned. my personal rule is that in an entire series, regardless of the length, it can only get 1 cliffhanger, and certainly not on the first book since it hasn't been earned.
the main issue with Truly Devious (other than the deviousness not being really there) is that we had a significant plotline that could have been resolved in a satisfactory manner, and instead, the author decided to bet on the cliffhanger. if the murder had been resolved, then the rest of the mysteries could have been moved to the next book(s). instead, we're left with a novel that has no conclusion. it's just one chapter in a longer story.
while I won't speak for others. I don't spend money on a novel to read a chapter. I do it to read a complete story,

How is this a best seller of any kind?
Revisado: 11-21-20
a 2 hour book bloated to 10 by needless technical detail.
I enjoy procedural and characters with different thought processes so this should have been a sure thing. But this is was among the least interesting book I've listened to recently. If I wanted to listen to a technical manual, I would I've bought one of those.

After saying goodbye to his life on earth, he never expected to find a brand new world still awaiting for him. One where immortals flew through the clouds and ancient evils hid below the surface. One where fables, myths, and legends filled every corner. One where he could finally start anew. Now, however, John is about to learn a valuable lesson, for any place humanity rules will always be the same - a domain where sin and ambition can only be tamed by power. Will he have the strength to walk this road on his own or will he be unable to heal the old wounds hidden deep within his heart?

At least it wasn't too boring
Revisado: 11-20-20
Who will enjoy this book: People who like playing videogames on God Mode. People who use their video gaming as excuses to kill anything that moves. People looking for power wish fulfillment. People who don't need much of a story in their book.
John starts book 1 as a sociopathic killer and ends book 4 as the same. the books are a series of events the sole purpose of which is to show us that John is just so much better and powerful than anyone else. His plot armor os so strong that people's personalities will change to accommodate his wishes, and that's before he gains the mind control ability.
I'm not going to comment on the language of the narration itself since these are the author's first books, but keep that in mind when you listen to it.

So, how old is this guy?
Revisado: 10-24-20
a 30 something gets godlike powers and immediately turns into a 17 year old.
That's my issue with the story. I couldn't buy the main character was in his 30s. We also get a character's back story for no apparent reason. And no sense of jeopardy at any point in the story.

Despite his warriors' lineage, Erroh would rather waste his potential stumbling alone from one tavern to the next, drinking and gambling. Fate, however, has greater plans for him. After decades of peace, a great war draws near, and though he doesn't know it, he is standing in the way of the first wave. What is more, and very much to his dismay, he's about to find out he's not entirely alone either. But Erroh has a plan, a simple plan.

a book with many problems
Revisado: 10-24-20
let's start with the title. Why is the book named after a location the characters barely spend any time in, and that has no actual bearing on the story?
On to the language; why take three paragraphs to say what could be said in one line? Why go over what could have happened if a action had been taken when the character won't take it? Why use such animalistic language without reason? I kept waiting for the main character to be revealed to be a were-creature.
On to motivation; I get the main character is a teen, but that isn't an excuse for him to let people walk all over him, not when he's also a highly trained warrior. Or treat his new wife poorly just because the plot calls for more drama.
On to PoV; too many of them aren't relevant to the story, of just plain boring.
And finally, on to the narration; over all, it's decent, but far too often the pause between what a character says and the dialog tag is so long that I expect a new chapter to start.
I muscled through it until 4 hours were left. Then, with each chapter end, I found myself wondering why I was still listening then, I couldn't go on anymore.

a kid with anger issues and no consequence
Revisado: 10-02-20
the earth is turned into an MMO, and someone with anger issues gets to let loose whenever he feels like it.
That's basically what this story is about.
the world is your typical "changed by some outside force into an MMO" and from there John needs to survive and make it to a safe zone. It's not bad.... but that's kind of the best thing I can say about it. very little about John is compelling, he's damaged and this world serves him rather well.
while listening to the book I kept getting uncomfortable about the situations John finds himself in when he's around people and it took me a while to figure out why. It's because Mister Tao Wong isn't willing to take John to the proper consequences of having the king of unchecked anger issues he has. he always pulls John back at the last minute and therefore never has to learn anything so by the time we reach the end of the book there's no real reason to have read it.

A revenge tale told too fast
Revisado: 08-12-20
I'm going to start by saying I loved how the mastermind class is being demonstrated in this book. I like the character interplay, on the whole, the core characters have interesting personalities, even those in their periphery.
the first issue is the same every litRPG book that takes place within an actual game suffered from. there is no sense of jeopardy because the MC is never really in any danger.
The second issue is that this is book 1 of a series, when it feels like it should be the culmination of a series. we are told of Streaks trials to get where he was at the start of the book. of how hard it was to get there, but it's just that something we are told and because I never got to feel how much was invested in him, it was harder to feel the MC's justification for everything that comes afterward.
another issue is how quickly we go from let's do this, to well it's done. just like the lack of jeopardy leads to not worrying about the MC, this led me to feel uncertain the victory was earned.
I expect I'll add the next book to my TBR list because I am curious to see how much of a villain Despot will end up being
