Historia
Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.... The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives - presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.

Left out a part of the book
Revisado: 02-14-23
Like another reviewer mentioned, Audible left out a party of the story. I deducted one star for this as that should absolutely not be tolerated unless a hook is abridged (and I would never purchase an abridged audiobook ever). Otherwise, I love the narrator and Rebecca is one of my favorite books- have listened to it numerous times over the years.

Fuyuko Irie is a freelance copyeditor in her mid-thirties. Working and living alone in a city where it is not easy to form new relationships, she has little regular contact with anyone other than her editor, Hijiri, a woman of the same age but with a very different disposition. When Fuyoku stops one day on a Tokyo street and notices her reflection in a storefront window, what she sees is a drab, awkward, and spiritless woman who has lacked the strength to change her life and decides to do something about it.

Enjoyable listen
Revisado: 05-16-22
I'm a fan of Mieko Kawakami's Breast and Eggs, so when I saw this new audiobook I immediately restarted my Audible subscription. The book's synopsis really appealed to me because I'm a loner like the main character. I enjoyed the book, and listened to it twice in a row. I really hope Audible will produce an audio of Kawakami's Ms. Ice Sandwich.

One of my favorite books
Revisado: 03-19-22
This is one of my favorite books. I’ve listened to it on audiobook numerous times, and I’m never sick of it. I’ve read most of Highsmith’s books and this is my favorite one, followed very closely by The Talented Mr. Ripley. I enjoy her other books quite a lot, but none of them have the same soul and these two books in my opinion. Carol is very different than her other novels but it conjures the same mood and emphasis on sensory pleasures. It’s definitely my favorite lesbian romance story, and I find both characters very intriguing.

Didn't like the narrator
Revisado: 02-21-22
Unfortunately I didn't like the narrator like other reviewers did. He often speaks in a low and breathy, yet hyper, voice and then periodically gets loud so I'm constantly having to adjust my volume. He also take a lot of nasally intakes of breath, and just has this tone to his voice that is somehow drab and boring to me, like a professor droning on in a lecture. I'm unable to focus on the book at all. I wish audible would make another recording of this book because the narrator makes all the difference, but I see I'm in the minority in disliking this narrator. It would be interesting to have a female narrator for this story. I loved Maggie Gyllenhaal's reading of Anna Karenina.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Historia
Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

Unique, quirky novel
Revisado: 01-07-22
I really love this book. I've listened to it probably more than a dozen times over the past few years, and I will definitely listen to it again. It's quirky, without being obnoxious, and the story of outsiders to society was done in a unique and not cliché way. It's simple and yet not cheap. I highly recommend it and am hoping for more translated works from Sayaka Murata in the future.

Historia
Elizabeth's mother was working as a nightclub hostess on US-occupied Okinawa when she met the American soldier who would become her husband. The language barrier and power imbalance that defined their early relationship followed them to the predominantly white, upstate New York suburb where they moved to raise their only daughter. There, Elizabeth grew up with the trappings of a typical American childhood and adolescence. Yet even though she felt almost no connection to her mother's distant home, she also felt out of place among her peers.

Historia
Beautiful, sophisticated and endlessly ambitious Lily Bart endeavours to climb the social ladder of New York's elite by securing a good match and living beyond her means. Now nearing 30 years of age and having rejected several proposals, forever in the hope of finding someone better, her future prospects are threatened. A damning commentary of 20th-century social order, Edith Wharton's tale established her as one of the greatest British novelists of the 1900s.

Revisado: 11-07-21
I adore The House of Mirth as a story and this narration was very enjoyable. I find this book so depressing in a captivating and beautiful way. The only downsides are Wharton's obvious anti-Semitism and digs at "female" behavior. I listened to this twice in a row and will definitely listen again.

Historia
A young woman walks into an employment agency and requests a job that has the following traits: It’s close to her home, and it requires no reading, no writing, and, ideally, very little thinking. Her first gig - watching the hidden-camera feed of an author suspected of storing contraband goods - turns out to be inconvenient. Her next gives way to the supernatural: announcing advertisements for shops that mysteriously disappear. As she moves from job to job, it becomes increasingly apparent that she's not searching for the easiest job at all but something altogether more meaningful.

I LOVED it
Revisado: 09-29-21
I'm not surprised by the other two poor reviews, because this is definitely a book that will only suit a certain type of reader. But I'm not exaggerating when I said I LOVED it. I can see myself listening to this over and over again. I loved the descriptions of food, the seemingly mundane yet fascinating look into the narrator's life, the interesting jobs, and the peek into Japan. I really wanted it to keep going with even more jobs, and was disappointed when it ended. If you like books about loners where nothing much happens, yet somehow it stays with you, you will like this book. My other favorites are Strange Weather in Tokyo, The Talented Mr Ripley, Breasts and Eggs, The Price of Salt, Kitchen (Banana Yoshimoto), Housekeeping (Marilynne Robinson), and a lot of Haruki Murakami's work. If you like these works, you will probably enjoy this too.

Historia
Best-selling and beloved Japanese author Hiromi Kawakami (The Nakano Thrift Shop) tells the story of an enigmatic man through the voices of 10 remarkable women who have loved him. Each woman has succumbed, even if only for an hour, to that seductive, imprudent, and furtively feline man who drifted so naturally into their lives. Still clinging to the vivid memory of his warm breath and his indecipherable sentences, 10 women tell their stories as they attempt to recreate the image of the unfathomable Nishino.

Revisado: 08-08-21
This is the type of audiobook I can listen to repeatedly. I didn't love the story as much as Hiromi Kawasaki's "Strange Weather in Tokyo," but I still found the story very enjoyable and oddly soothing, odd because it's basically about a douche who somehow is able to win over many women. I also liked the voice of the narrator a lot.
