Women Medicine
Revisado: 01-13-25
To begin, I rarely write reviews. This is a wonderfully inspiring and yet heart wrenching and simultaneously heart healing book! If you're heart aches for itself, for this world, sees the universe as a whole and the energy of spirit that moves around inside it then you want to read this book. I find it hard to be a white woman filled with these spirit senses. I think pretty much all woman spirits (meaning regardless of what your body's sexual organ was born as) can feel this energy. As such, we feel the suffering. We receive suffering. We try to deal with how this suffering has come to us. We're constantly striving to heal this suffering both inside and outside of ourselves. This book showed me the universe offers the medicine for healing. I've often found it difficult to talk to mental health professionals because once you speak of things they cannot see (visions, ghosts, predictive dreams) they believe you have a condition, a psychosis of some sort. (Not that I was diagnosed with such but it's just the comments and looks you get if you try to share these emotions and thoughts with a world who finds it socially unacceptable.) So you stop talking from your heart and can't seem to find healing. The Native American women in the story talked it out with true belief and received universal and ancestral insight and healing. I kept hearing the words "Women Medicine" as I was sobbing through the Author's closing remarks. What better medicine than love from the generations of women that came before you! I think all us woman have that if we just find a way to hear it like Jessie did with her Council of Dolls. I am so grateful to Mona Susan Power for creating and sharing this story. I do not feel alone or crazy seeking, exploring, or just simply believing in my Woman Medicine.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Excellent, Moving, Original!!
Revisado: 08-23-21
Don't get stuck and stop reading in the beginning as it may seem a little confusing. KEEP READING!! This is a novel not to be missed. Life itself is the substance behind the story and, for some, answers why they are here. it's very beautiful in the storytelling which sucks you in to the places and people!

WTF, Sorry Oprah!!
Revisado: 06-25-21
I'm a huge fan of the "grotesque" which is a word Oprah used to describe this book, which is more than distorted or ugly or strange. I find it more forcefully gross so the author can just get some attention and sell a few books. It might help to know about Chinese) Taiwanese culture/myths/folklore etc. as I'm guessing that's what these bizarre images are talking about, but there's no explanation to the meanings. It certainly doesn't make me want to learn more about the culture with everything being pretty foul. The book is very disjointed and hard to wrap your head around.

Prepared to be overwhelmed with emotions! These stories are so beautifully written and performed. It is a must listen. I suggest giving yourself enough time to listen to each story straight through to feel it's power, like there is in a piece of music!

Historia
The metropolis of New Crobuzon sprawls at the center of the world. Humans and mutants and arcane races brood in the gloom beneath its chimneys, where the river is sluggish with unnatural effluent and foundries pound into the night. For a thousand years, the Parliament and its brutal militias have ruled over a vast economy of workers and artists, spies and soldiers, magicians, crooks, and junkies. Now a stranger has arrived, with a pocketful of gold and an impossible demand. And something unthinkable is released.

Mix of Poetry and Sci-Fi
Revisado: 05-18-20
Absolutely marvelous! I had already greatly enjoyed "The City and the City" and thought this book was even better. And my favorite narrator John Lee gives the characters such presence. What a great combo of sci-fi and dystopian, and steampunk, with grotesque curiosities! The characters have great development with Yagharek having a particularly beautifully flowing "diary" on the side, which was my favorite bit. It is a long book but a fast read, with a story that absorbs you and you can't put down!

Excellent, Beautiful Writing
Revisado: 01-30-20
Has both all the historical facts and a real life love story. The reading is smooth, insightful, and beautiful. Don't be afraid of the subject matter (as I was at first) because the story goes well beyond the facts of the Holocaust into something much more meaningful. It's definitely one of those books that is hard to put down!

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Good Concept But Needs Expanded
Revisado: 12-12-19
Was really looking forward to this but it left me lacking. If you didn't know about Marie Curie you'd be totally lost. I wish it would have have given more insight on this relationship she had with her friend. Instead it was like sone good ideas about a story thrown together on a page. The beginning was great but the change in person and skim ovet happenings of the day and life of Marie Curie were just odd. The ending odder. Maybe you have to see the actual play instead of just listen?

Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Born just fifteen months apart, Subhash and Udayan Mitra are inseparable brothers, one often mistaken for the other in the Calcutta neighborhood where they grow up. But they are also opposites, with gravely different futures ahead. It is the 1960s, and Udayan—charismatic and impulsive—finds himself drawn to the Naxalite movement, a rebellion waged to eradicate inequity and poverty; he will give everything, risk all, for what he believes.

Super Depressing
Revisado: 09-01-18
Took me 5 tries to read this book club book which I gave up on when the club actually read it. I decided to finally push thru and read the whole thing because I loved "The Namesake" but this just wasn't for me. A totally depressing story that made me feel more sad and lonely in my own life struggles. And I completely did not understand the ending, plus it jumped around WAY more than necessary.

Eh...Not Mr. Heller's Best Work
Revisado: 08-10-18
I thought this book was sooooooo predictable and really lacked the great imagery and colorful story telling like The Dog Stars and The Painter had. Honestly about 1/4 way thru I wanted to stop reading but figured I loved Peter Heller so I'll hear him out. I dont know why in the world someone would call this his best work to date?? He certainly did leave it open for a sequel though. Next book...Isabella??
