Historia
Kraig Holmes is a hard-working independent contractor living in Baltimore. He’s an average guy - with one exception. A painful secret haunts him daily. Kraig had a one-time sexual experience with a man he knew little about. It propelled him into a lifestyle of promiscuity and an insatiable appetite for dangerous sex. When the guy disappeared into thin air, Kraig was left hurt and devastated.

Starts off strong, but devolves into forehead-smacking stupidity. Main character actually seems to forget a major plot element that he was involved in, only to remember it in the next chapter... and who HESITATES to give blood if your mother's partner is in surgery and needs it?! There's nearly an entire chapter worth of exposition between the ask and the *reluctant* agreement. It's not a kidney for Christs sake! Aggravatingly bad writing at the end.

Historia
The Gododdin charts the rise and fall of 363 warriors in the battle of Catraeth, around the year AD 600. The men of the Brittonic kingdom of Gododdin rose to unite the Welsh and the Picts against the Angles, only to meet a devastating fate. Composed by the poet Aneirin, the poem was originally orally transmitted as a sung elegy, passed down for seven centuries before being written down in early Welsh by two medieval scribes. It is composed of one hundred laments to the named characters who fell and follows a sophisticated alliterative poetics.

LOVED this translation - in large part because it INCLUDES the Old Welsh ie. you can hear the "music" of the original that she refers to in the introduction. Wish all medieval translations did this!

Had the Angles and Saxons not purposefully migrated to the isles of the Britons and brought with them their already-well-developed use of language, Angelina Jolie may never have appeared in the movie Beowulf. Professor Michael D.C. Drout is at his best when lecturing on the fascinating history, language, and societal adaptations of the Anglo-Saxons.

Very well done. In-depth history of a fascinating era that still influences our culture today. Also offers plenty of "color" in the original Old English so one really gets a feel for the language. Time well spent!
