Historia
A vicious 15-year-old droog is the central character of this 1963 classic, a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. In Anthony Burgess' nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology.

It’s a war filled with larger than life characters. There will be sledging, accusations of cheating, theft and performance enhancing drugs. And allegations that Australia was cheated out of a Guinness World Record. In the process of charting the scandal-plagued race to breed the world’s hottest chilli, the audio documentary lifts the lid on the subculture of ‘Chilli-heads’, hardcore chilli fans spread across the globe who compete in chilli eating and breeding competitions.

Fascinating!
Revisado: 08-30-19
Fascinating story with way more drama than I expected out of simple chilli peppers. This is definitely more about the people than the peppers, so if you want anything in depth on the plants themselves this isn’t the book for you. But if you want a short, fun, human interest story, definitely listen to this one. The narration was great. Who doesn’t love an Australian accent!?

Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

I loved this sci-fi AU about the space program. It touches on the issues sexism, racism, and climate change. It’s both devastating and hopeful. Math is beautiful and science matters. ❤️

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen. That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right. Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face.

I loved this story. It’s even better if you’ve read Fangirl first. It’s so charming and enthralling. The performance by the narrator was really great and added to the fun of the story. Jump in and fall in love with Baz and Simon just like the rest of us fan girls. :)

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow Series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

So powerful
Revisado: 10-26-18
Be a stone catcher. Be there to catch the stones thrown at those weaker, more vulnerable, and more disadvantaged than yourself. That is one of the lessons of this exceptionally powerful book.
Justice supposed to be a balance scale, but that is not the case in a system riddled with racism, classism, bigotry, and a focus on conviction rates. How can we even begin to presume to wield capital punishment with the scales so unbalanced? Knowing innocent people have been exonerated, are still sitting on death row, or have already been executed?
We shouldn’t and we can’t without sacrificing our own humanity and moral integrity.
Whether you believe in the death penalty or not, if you have any interest in our criminal justice system, this book is a must read.

Good Narration, Tiresome Story
Revisado: 08-09-18
Much better books have come out of the South. This story is often nauseating, very unfulfilling, and thoroughly tiresome. And I even like Scarlett.
