Thank you, Audible. I never would have selected this on my own. I learned so much about M. Curie and what a remarkable woman she was, the immense difficulties she overcame, and the fact that she earned 2 Nobel Prizes. What a fascinating woman. What a miserable death, a death for science. She came alive in these pages.

Why doesn't the U.S. honor its female codebreakers

I have read and heard plenty about the British women codebreakers, but never even received so much as a hint about American women. What our ladies did was truly monumental. They helped sink enemy submarines, blow up planes, provide the secret information of war negotiations and troop movements. They were the core of our coding operations, with a man or two serving in primarily administrative posts. We need a movie, book, and tv series on these women. Why are we decades behind the Brits?

Interesting expossure to Australian life

I initially did not expect to enjoy this; then I could not put it down. I found the family interactions, the mystery, and the challenges of living in the Australian outback all very intriguing. I am looking for more of her books.

Delightful

McCall Smith writes well-rounded characters that bring sunshine into our lives. I must admit to having a challenge differentiating the names of the two protagonists, but eventually got them straight. We root for them and their personal and business challenges. The descriptions of Botswana life are intriguing. And the story keeps moving.
This book left me with a smile on my face.

Disappointing. Boring.

For those who enjoyed the wit, unique characters, and fast-paced plot of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, you will find a glaring absence in "Career of Evil." I found Rowling, writing as Galbraith, to lack ingredients I look for in a good mystery. The two protagonists were mundane and flat; the story, which I think was supposed to be a detective procedural, was not internally driven; and I found nothing to make me care about either.
I hope Rawling will drop this Galbraith series and return to the masterpiece writing of which she is capable.

Fabulous

As usual, the writing is lyrical. (I purchase the hardbacks so I can reread and savour the language. The mystery holds surprises at every level. Each character is developed in an easy, deep way that few other authors meet. The book can be read on so many levels, which makes Louise Penny one of the best mystery writers of our time.

Far more than a police procedural

I usually use audiobooks to fall asleep to. With Hunting Dogs, I had to take off the next day to listen. I could not put it down.
Many subplots intertwine cogently to make the main one compelling. Wisting, a policeman, is under investigation for falsifying evidence in a murder case. The presumed murderer feeds Wisting leads to the real dirty cop, but does not name him. Wisting takes steps to resolve the original case but that involves his daughter, a journalist determined to clear him, and himself in a similar kidnapping that may end in murder.
This is a fascinating insight into police politics and procedure, journalism, Norway, and detection of human nature. It is full of twists and surprises.
