Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Deep, crusty characters
Revisado: 03-15-25
It’s a world unto itself, and a journey across it. I’m so glad to have ridden along with these folks. Beautifully spoken too, although I slowed it down to .95 to savor the telling.

In London, twenty-six-year-old Venetia Stanley—aristocratic, clever, bored, reckless—is part of a fast group of upper-crust bohemians and socialites known as “The Coterie.” She’s also engaged in a clandestine love affair with the Prime Minister, H. H. Asquith, a man more than twice her age. He writes to her obsessively, sharing the most sensitive matters of state.

Such a fine writer. Abundance of historical detail, maybe too much for some, but I felt transported into a very consequential moment in time through the private torments of these few characters.

Historia
Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Great characters in fine writing
Revisado: 04-26-24
Towles is such a fine writer, a pleasure to listen to his flowing prose — in the service of a good twisty story, and finely wrought characters. You just want to tag along with them, figuring things out. In 1930s LA, no less. Sleuthing with battered, philosophical characters. Especially Eve.

Historia
Born at the time of Waterloo in the wild countryside of Shropshire, England, Prudence Sarn is a passionate girl, cursed with a harelip - her “precious bane”. She is cursed for it, too, by the superstitious people among whom she lives. Prue loves two things: the remote countryside of her birthplace and, hopelessly, Kester Woodseaves, the weaver. The tale of how Kester gradually discerns Prue’s true beauty is set against the tragic drama of Prue’s brother, Gideon, a man who is out of harmony with the natural world and whose recklessness may ensnare them all in tragedy.

Remarkably detailed telling of a way of past British village life from a woman’s perspective. The protagonist’s outsider status sharpens her observations. Excellent and evocative reader.

Complex but engaging tale
Revisado: 05-27-23
So many layers, interwoven characters, and subplots, creating a portrait of an extended family over 150 years. Centered in one special place, one branching mystery, and a thread of magical realism throughout. Well written, of course, and deeply imagined. Also beautifully read as the audiobook.

A truly human story
Revisado: 03-07-23
…Meaning that in the two protagonists, the reader can feel the awkwardness, longing, regret, doubts, and the process of stumbling toward self-awareness. And care about it. Also it’s a small town world, well-sketched.
