Intense and moving story if you stick with it
Revisado: 12-27-22
Starts out a bit slow and is awkwardly written, but the development of the characters and plot is excellent. You get to know the main characters really well and care about them. Multiple, interesting and intense plotlines develop that keep you fascinated. There are some holes in research (e.g. what do Marines really say and do -- which I know as a Marine myself -- we do not leave our weapons lying around -- see Rifleman's Creed -- and we do not say "drill sergeant", never never, not even "D.I." but only Drill Instructor; I'm not being picky, these are things every single Marine would shake their head at, like the "Marine" in "A Few Good Men" erroneously saluting indoors). There are some big holes in the plot (e.g. bad guys come to ambush the heroes believing that they are in a certain place even though their vehicle is obviously gone). However, the overall storyline is fascinating and the characters clear and consistent. Finally, this is a harsh and gory zombie apocalyptic novel that pulls no punches, while also having a consistent mention of Christian faith and principles without being preachy. As a believer myself I was hoping because of the religious content that it was going to be a story clean of profanity. I am not being judgmental but as a conservative Christian I was looking for books without profanity and sadly this collection was not it. Such writing is hard to find. If you are looking for profanity-free science fiction see books by Jonathan Yanez (ONLY by him, not in combination with other authors). However I did appreciate in this book series the clear expression of Christian faith and the Gospel. Again, not preachy, just a clear expression of people's personal faith. The story / series wraps up with several monumental, extremely moving events of both spiritual and non-spiritual significance.

Historia
At the dawn of the 20th century, humanity was facing global disaster. Mass starvation, long predicted for the fast-growing population, was about to become a reality. A call went out to the worlds scientists to find a solution. This is the story of the two enormously gifted, fatally flawed men who found it: the brilliant, self-important Fritz Haber and the reclusive, alcoholic Carl Bosch. Together they discovered a way to make bread out of air, built city-sized factories, controlled world markets, and saved millions of lives.

History Written Like A Novel
Revisado: 01-24-13
This is the fascinating story of two German scientists whose revolutionary inventions gave the world an inexhaustible supply of both fertilizer and explosives -- ultimately created from air. If you have any interest in history you will enjoy this, not only because it is about some extremely important turning points, but also because it is true factual history written like a novel, which makes it even more palatable. The reading is pretty good as well.

Historia
Translated by W. E. D. Rouse, The March of the Ten Thousand is one of the most admired and widely read pieces of ancient literature to come down to us. Xenophon employs a very simple, straightforward style to describe what is probably the most exciting military adventure ever undertaken. It is an epic of courage, faith and democratic principle.

Interesting Historical Narrative
Revisado: 01-23-12
What made the experience of listening to The March of the Ten Thousand the most enjoyable?
I like history and Charlton Griffin's reading. It is also very interesting to hear an historical account written by someone who was actually there (Xenophon).
What was one of the most memorable moments of The March of the Ten Thousand?
When after winning their part of the battle, but finding out that the battle in general was lost, they did not panic or surrender but maintained their formations and marched solidly out.
Which character – as performed by Charlton Griffin – was your favorite?
Xenophon, who narrates the story as a firsthand witness and participant.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Ten thousand men, through two thousand miles of enemies.
Any additional comments?
The story was by no means dry, but neither was it very exciting. I would say that it was on the positive side of interesting.

Great Except the Profanity
Revisado: 06-21-07
The part of this that I listened to is a great story, exciting and well-written: about a third of the way through I had to stop because I couldn't tolerate the continued use of harsh profanity (e.g. the "f" word). Anyone who is concerned about this should be advised. In this context it would be nice to have an edited version.

Revisado: 06-21-07
This mystery story is interesting and enjoyable for the most part, but it is sometimes slow. It also lacks the intensity and depth of characters that one sees in works by other mystery writers like Conan-Doyle or Christie. All things considered, not bad, but not spectacular.

Exciting Story by the Best Reader
Revisado: 02-18-06
This exciting sequel picks up immediately where "Kidnapped" left off, continuing the adventure of David Balfour and his good friend Alan Breck Stewart. In this novel, however, the author combines a story of cliffhanger romance with his trademark style of high adventure. As for the reader, David Case (aka Frederick Davidson), he is, as always, the best man for the job. Not only are his dramatization and voice differentiation unparalleled, but he is a master of the Scottish, English and French accents with which the story abounds.

Outstanding Production of a Powerful Story
Revisado: 01-12-05
Louis L'amour's stories are always the best. Listening to this story, furthermore, is not like listening to a story, it is like watching a movie, or even better, like actually being on the scene. The story starts by establishing deep personal foundations under the characters, and proceeds to build excitement and suspense to a peak. This program also includes a bonus hour (after 2+ hours of the story) about the making of the audio, and concludes with some personal time with the author himself speaking: the late Louis L'amour. If there is anything disappointing about this, it is that there are not more like it available, NOW.

Historia
One of the greatest treats in all world literature, this masterpiece from Mark Twain inspired a literary revolution. The novel offers both brilliant humor and tragedy as Huck and Jim explore the moral dilemmas of slavery and freedom. Huck, the narrator, is shrewd, ingenious, and literal; he reports on everything he sees, which allows the listener to experience the hypocrisy of "sivilization".

Classic Story, Great Reader
Revisado: 09-09-04
The story of Huck Finn of course is about a (teenage?) boy in the mid-1800's who takes off down the Mississippi River on a raft in the company of a runaway slave, Jim. They have some adventures and Mark Twain's ingenious satire adds flavor to it besides. As for the reader, not only does he have the perfect voice for Huck Finn, but his ability to create different kinds of voices is phenomenal.

"Mystery! That was the charm. That speechless tongue, those prisoned features, that heart so freightened with unspoken troubles, and that breast so oppressed with its piteous secret had been there. These dank walls had known the man whose dolorous story is a sealed book forever! There was fascination in the spot." Thus Mark Twain described his enchantment with the historical legend of the man in the iron mask. Alexandre Dumas, one of France's best-selling nineteenth century writers, took a different tack. He chose to write a historical romance filled with "l'action et l'armour" and...

A Romantic Realism
Revisado: 09-05-04
This is a review for Parts I and II. By romantic I'm talking about adventurous -- yet for all the thrill of fictional adventure in this tale, the last part of the 3 Musketeers series, the author balances it out with tragedies that make it a more realistic and thus more respectable work. It is an exciting but sad tale, faced paced and multi-fasceted from the beginning -- and all things considered, the listener can be satisfied with it. And finally, the reader is the perfect reader for this story.
