Historia
He is a good man, a brilliant corporate executive, an honest, handsome family man admired by men and desired by women. But a lifetime ago Ben Tyson was a lieutenant in Vietnam. There the men under his command committed a murderous atrocity -- and together swore never to tell the world what they had done. Now the press, army justice, and the events he tried to forget have caught up with Ben Tyson.

Brilliant story and reading.
Revisado: 10-10-23
Some 40 years after it’s publication I discovered this remarkable book by DeMille. As a Vietnam Veteran I was reminded of the complex morality of the war and the horror it wrought on both the Vietnamese and young American soldiers. DeMille highlights some of the reasons veterans rarely talk about their experiences.
Scott Brick is a master, bringing the story to life.

Historia
Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

Excellent
Revisado: 07-01-21
Malcolm explores the history of the USAF, from its awkward beginnings as the Army Air Corps and the critical events of WWII. Most remarkable is the development of air force doctrine, with the American divergence from British strategy of night bombing. Had the war not ended in Allied victory, British Air Marshall "Bomber" Harris and the Brits would have been facing war crimes trials for their indiscriminate nighttime saturation bombing of civilian centers (of course they were repaying Germans for the bombs, V-1 and V-2 missiles dropped on London).
The Americans took the moral high ground, attempting to hit German military targets during daylight raids, which cost thousands of airmen their lives as they flew into swarms of German aircraft. NB - this has evolved through the decades where the USAF seeks to minimize collateral damage to non-combatants. With "smart" bombs, the size of bombs has shrunk as precision increased. In Vietnam we dropped 500, 1000 and 2000lb bombs; today it's often a 250lb bomb targeting bad guys in a specific part of a building. War is never pretty - always ugly but necessary. Thank God we have the very best Air Force in the world.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

A Book for Today
Revisado: 08-15-20
Perfect for our current examination of race in America, this remarkable bio of Grant reminds us of the terrible struggle against slavery over 150 years ago, the failure of Reconstruction and the continuing need to repair the consequences. It is a struggle that defines us, and makes us unique in the World.
Two ordinary men, Lincoln and Grant, rose to take their place amongst our greatest American heroes. Don’t overlook this book.

Historia
In the chaos following World War II, the US government faced many difficult decisions, including what to do with the Third Reich's scientific minds. These were the brains behind the Nazis' once-indomitable war machine. So began Operation Paperclip, a decades-long, covert project to bring Hitler's scientists and their families to the United States. Many of these men were accused of war crimes, and others had stood trial at Nuremberg; one was convicted of mass murder and slavery.

Fascinating, but
Revisado: 07-16-20
Jacobsen’s research and story provide a useful reminder of the deeply complex time following V-E Day, and the havoc in post-war Europe. The shocking cruelty that pervaded the Nazi military regime is brought to life in all of its horror.
But then America is thrust into the Cold War, as the Soviet Union prepares for and promises WWIII, and everything changes. The mad rush to capture German scientists accelerates as the dark future is revealed, which changes Western imperatives from justice to survival. The astonishing advancements made in Germany and the scientists who carry that knowledge may very well determine the winner of the coming war.
The author’s performance reveals a contemporary view of this dangerous time, safely removed from the profound uncertainty, which conveys a naive and simplistic judgment against Operation Paperclip. The fact is that we owe our accelerated development of missiles, medicine, technology and sciences to the collaboration with these ex-Nazi scientists. Which may very well have prevented WWIII.

Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Important History
Revisado: 06-14-20
Captures many of the air war stories from The Vietnam War, as many of these air warriors are passing. Often puts you in the pilot’s seat, during the poorly managed, heroically fought war.
Don’t miss War For The Hell of It, a superb book about the F-4 flying out of Thailand.

Historia
In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.

Much Needed Truth and Reality
Revisado: 05-21-20
Dan shares his personal journey as an essential rebuttal of the popular rejection of our American story. Cancel culture is a blight on college campuses today, appealing to those seeking anger over truth and learning. Popular media supports and promotes this victim culture as a means to build poor ratings.
The book should be a part of our national debate.

Historia
From June 1967 to June 1968, Tom Johnson accumulated an astonishing 1,600 flying hours piloting the UH-1 "Iroquois" - better known as the "Huey" - as part of the famous First Air Cavalry Division. His battalion was one of the most decorated units of the Vietnam War, and helped redefine modern warfare. Johnson's riveting memoir takes us into key battles and rescue missions, including those for Hue and Khe Sanh. In harrowing detail, he tells of being shot down in the battle of A Shau Valley, of surviving enemy attacks during the Tet Offensive, and of a death-defying nighttime river rescue.

Excellent story of a Huey pilot in early Vietnam (1967-68). Lots of action and incredible stories of survival. But as a guy who grew up in Georgia, like the author, the twangy hillbilly performance was VERY off-putting - a major distraction from the story.

John Plaster’s riveting account of his covert activities as a member of a special operations team during the Vietnam War is “a true insider’s account...this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project” (Publishers Weekly). Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most secret elite US military unit to serve in the Vietnam War - so secret that its very existence was denied by the government.

Revisado: 08-20-19
The SOG operators were some of the most remarkable soldiers in Vietnam - or anywhere. They were the eyes and ears, and often sword point of our politically misguided war, where every advantage was undermined and victory was never a goal.
While Washington politicians played with maps, these men were risking all to win the war and save brother soldiers. They are the noble warriors, the unsung heroes of Vietnam.
