Since the release of the first high republic book, I’ve been following pretty closely because I want to be caught up in the current Star Wars canon. So far, all of the books in the high republic series have been exceptionally mid.

I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It had great characters who all felt distinct, new worlds and cultures, and it shed more light on the other books.

This one gave me hope that more good High Republic books are coming.

I’ve been reading all the high republic books to keep up with the new canon, and I know that each of these are supposed to be build up for an eventual movie, but we deserve books that tell stories. In an attempt to make these characters more relatable and inclusive, they’ve transformed the characters into caricatures of young adult novel stereotypes. This distillation has removed the unique magic that comes with Star Wars storytelling. It’s too human, and, if not for the lightsabers and last minute insertion of yoda, it would be hard to identify this book as Star Wars content.
The plot doesn’t really begin until the last third of the book, and it happens so quickly and abruptly, it feels rushed and cheap.
Also, why couldn’t they get actual Star Wars music to score this production? They’re using a cringey royalty-free fantasy soundtrack that is always distracting.
This book made me appreciate the aftermath trilogy more.
I’m gonna keep at it though…

A dry story used to set up three more interesting stories. Excited to see what they will make of it. This story makes no impact to the overall Star Wars story or universe.

This was the book Orson Scott always intended to write. It’s a story of truth and understanding and an objective view on the value of life told in a beautifully scientific and believable sci-fi world.

The story is intelligent and compelling, but the immaturity and lack of character development in jazz, the main character, is a little annoying. Curb rash and selfish attitude is consistent throughout the novel until the last page. The science is believable and the action is riveting, and Rosario Dawson does a great job in presenting the story with accurate accents and her unique inflection.

The collected fictional works of Lovecraft as presented by a Lovecraft expert. JD knows the stories, and the words roll off his tongue smoothly, but he lacks a certain charisma that many good narrators have. Many spooky or terrifying parts of the stories are filled by his bored and lazy tone, but it’s difficult to fully dull the writing of Howard Phillip Lovecraft.

Slower than Jurassic Park and Timeline, but twice as scientific and believable. The biology and science used in this book was real and made this story darkly creepy. While it is not an explosive action thriller, it belongs in the epic scientific thrillers mastered by Crichton. He does so much research to make his novels intelligent and believable, and that’s what makes his thrillers so scary.

A series of lazily written first-person short stories telling canonically irrelevant stories about Luke Skywalker. What was advertised as a book that filled in the years between ROTJ and TFA is more of a children’s book of cartoony tales including one of a talking flea that saved the witless Luke from Jabba’s rancor. Yes really. This book is the literary equivalent of clickbait. January LaVoy does the best she can, but the book itself is poorly written and adds nothing to the epic narrative of Star Wars.

One of the best fiction novels I’ve read in years. A MUST READ for all those who label themselves as nerdy or geeky. Intelligent, exciting, funny, compelling, and all with an underlying theme that causes us all to inspect our minds and what’s most valuable in life.

Timothy Zahn is the only author who knows how to properly write the mind of Thrawn. Seeing the feared genius finally officially in the official storyline of Star Wars brings more joy than I can write in a small box. It's a Sherlock Holmes minded admiral surrounded by the discriminatory and hateful Empire at the ascension of the Rebellion. Thrawn is a surgically accurate tactician. Seeing Timothy Zahn writing the Thrawn character again voiced by Marc Thompson was nostalgic and fresh at the same time.
