Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

A little disappointed
Revisado: 07-26-24
Narrator was outstanding. I did not find this book to be as enjoyable as the previous ones in the series. I felt that the whole plot was setting the scene for more to come, but it just didn’t have the spark and character development of the others. Still, hoping for better to come.

Hardy's first major literary success, here brought to life by narrator Nathaniel Parker, is the story of the independent and spirited Bathsheba Everdene, who inherits her uncle's farm, the largest estate in the area. She surprises the villagers of Weatherbury by deciding to run it herself. Attracted to this bold young woman are three suitors all vying for her affections. They include the lonely gentleman-farmer Boldwood, the young and handsome but inconsiderate Sergeant Troy and the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak.

Historia
A thousand years have passed since a dragon has been seen in the world. Science and technology have replaced magic, which has dwindled until it has become little more than an element of myth and legend. There are those who still have dragon blood flowing through their veins, distant descendants of the mighty creatures of old. These rare humans have the power to cast magic, the power to heal, and the power to craft alchemical weapons capable of starting wars...or ending them.

Revisado: 02-01-21
This series is good for light easy listening. Fairly fast paced with an interesting storyline. The narrator is pretty good with the exception of a few oddly pronounced words. She adds a ‘t’ the the end of the word ‘even’. That word is generously used in the text and that pronunciation really irritated me by the end.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-20-20
Without giving away the storyline, I will say that for an author to scathingly mention portraits of “old white men” in courthouses, then proceed to prove himself that very thing In his treatment of the characters and themes in this novel completely ruined it for me. Returning this one, with attitude.

Hidden gem of a book!
Revisado: 01-04-19
I found this book while searching for new releases. The summary caught my interest but I hesitated to purchase because there were no reviews. However, I knew I could return it if I didn’t like it, so I took a chance and was well rewarded.
This book would be a bestseller if it were promoted. Fantastic story and good writing. I hope an Audible editor will listen to this one and promote it, because this is one of the best books I’ve listened to in some time. And I listen to two or three books a week.

A Beautiful, Bitter Pill

*possible ending spoiler*
I hesitated to buy this one after reading the Amazon reviews about how dark it is. Many compared the writing to that of Cormac McCarthy, one of my favorite authors. That's why I had to try it. After listening to it, I agree that there are similarities. This book is beautifully written, the settings so realistic that you feel like you are there. The only problem is, you don't want to be there. Not at the beginning, the middle, nor the end. What makes this book different from one of McCarthy's is that there is no humor, and not even a glimmer of hope for redemption. No, I take that back. There was a glimmer, but it was ruthlessly ground out, as it should have been, in this book's unflinchingly dismal and brutal world. I was so torn between how much I admired the writing and how depressed it made me to listen to it, that I couldn't decide whether to give it five stars or one. So I gave it three. I still haven't decided if I'm glad I bought it or not. When my endorphin levels recover, I may actually recommend it.

More than a romance novel
Revisado: 03-14-13
This is a very enjoyable novel. Yes, it is a romance, and will probably mostly appeal to women readers, but it is not 'typical' of that genre. Because of the travel and wonderful foodie appeal, it reminded me in some ways of Eat, Pray, Love. I particularly liked the maturity of the characters, both in age and life experience. The narration was excellent as well.

Historia
Freeman, the new novel by Leonard Pitts, Jr., takes place in the first few months following the Confederate surrender and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Upon learning of Lee's surrender, Sam - a runaway slave who once worked for the Union Army - decides to leave his safe haven in Philadelphia and set out on foot to return to the war-torn South. What compels him on this almost-suicidal course is the desire to find his wife, the mother of his only child, whom he and their son left behind 15 years earlier on the Mississippi farm to which they all "belonged".
