Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Compelling and inspiring story of an amazing human I’d never heard of. Humble, extraordinarily brave, and MORE THAN worthy to be part of the history of WWII.

Thought provoking. Emotion invoking. So moving.
Revisado: 07-16-24
Relevant. Brilliantly captures the discord of then and now. Tears flowed profusely when Frankie read her journal entry near the end. Nothing has better explained the confusion my idealistic self felt during the 60s and 70s and the profound sadness I feel in this current insanity.

Endearing characters in a horrendous time
Revisado: 04-07-24
Loved the characters and their quirkiness and kindness amidst the horrors of war. Never underestimate one person’s ability to change a piece of this world. It’s never too late.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Touching story of redemption and enlightenment
Revisado: 07-20-23
Characters are flawed but mostly endearing as they face racism and loneliness to forge unbreakable bonds across racial barriers. We live and we learn, hopefully we all do.
