Historia
Maeve, daughter of Lord Sean of Sevenwaters, was badly burned as a child and carries the legacy of that fire in her crippled hands. After ten years, she’s returning home, having grown into a courageous, forthright woman with a special gift for gentling difficult animals. But while her body’s scars have healed, her spirit remains fragile, fearing the shadows of her past.

The everlasting might of light.
Revisado: 11-20-23
I have purchased and read every single one of Juliet Marillier’s book. Her writing bring magic and hope; in spite of cruelty, sadness and strife. The women are brave in their fear. Good men exist. Bad men and women exist. Yet love is also present and offers hope told through Celtic fantasy. So grateful…my favorite fantasy writer. Much respect.

Historia
The year is 1921. Lesley Hamlyn and her husband, Robert, a lawyer and war veteran, are living at Cassowary House on the Straits Settlement of Penang. When “Willie” Somerset Maugham, a famed writer and old friend of Robert’s, arrives for an extended visit with his secretary Gerald, the pair threatens a rift that could alter more lives than one. Maugham, one of the great novelists of his day, is beleaguered: Having long hidden his homosexuality, his unhappy and expensive marriage of convenience becomes unbearable after he loses his savings—and the freedom to travel with Gerald.

Sigh, I wanted to love this so much…
Revisado: 10-24-23
Both previous books touched my heart with awe and respect. Somehow, this book which combined stories of fiction and fact about authors and people I “knew” from previous readings and my own knowledge base proved a disservice to my enjoyment. Just didn’t mesh with what my heart wanted….

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Brave man, wonderful book
Revisado: 01-19-23
What courage it must have taken to write, publish, and read this book. Much respect, Prince Harry! Bravo for breaking the silence of evil doings. Need a friend? Surrogate grandmother? Sign me up. I’ll stand beside you and ward of those eager to belittle your right to defend your family and your honor. Well done. I salute you!

Historia
When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewis - known as Jack - she was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasn’t holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford professor and the beloved writer of The Chronicles of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters.

Love hampered by the times
Revisado: 12-10-22
Yes indeed, a book about Christian love in the time period of when these two people lived. Some people would say it was a “perfect” love story. Not for me. Religion helps many people, For me, the arcane rules make me crazy. So it was with this love story.

Historia
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force. Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.

The best antidote for fear is courage
Revisado: 12-08-22
What a superb author. Fear, bravery, horror, hope, loss, betrayal; all shared within this story. I am old enough to know how the Soviet bloc countries disintegrated and the starving, frightened people who lived in the wake of that torment. Thank God for memory, for truth that seeps out even as the world forgets. Thank you, Ruta Sepetys. Much respect for you and the survivors.

I love this book even though I’m old
Revisado: 12-06-22
When I started reading I thought I would hate the experience of reading a memoir of a white rich girl. Why did I even purchase this audiobook? And yet…hearing the author read her truth, her struggles, her attempts to create a life of her own, won me over in spite of my prejudices. And I learned to cherish CJ Hauser! Another flawed human being trying her best to make sense of a life that was not what she had anticipated. I loved her truth telling, her acknowledgement of her own mistakes, the seemingly endless struggle to understand her place in the life she was living. Brava, CH Hauser. Much respect. Much admiration. Job well done.

Historia
Spanning three generations, this novel of family and myth is told through a series of flashbacks that depict events of staggering horror set against a landscape of gemlike beauty, as the Chinese battle both Japanese invaders and each other in the turbulent 1930s. A legend in China, where it won major literary awards and inspired an Oscar-nominated film directed by Zhang Yimou, Red Sorghum is a book in which fable and history collide to produce fiction that is entirely new—and unforgettable.

Incredibly violent Chinese/Japanese history
Revisado: 12-02-22
Chinese people with Japanese invaders. The stories are in keeping with the violence of the times but way beyond what I could endure just reading it. The writing is beautiful even with the horrible descriptions. Certainly a life I would never want to experience.

Too revolting for Gamache Fans
Revisado: 12-02-22
This book should come with disclaimers. Too brutal. Too many evil people beyond the pale. I love the goodness of Armond Gamache. I have read all of the books in this series with some bringing me to tears with the hope and goodness Gamache makes possible. This book just left me feeling sick. I wish I had never read it.

Historia
So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on legends of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.
