Historia
He called himself Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever because he dared not believe in this strange alternate world on which he suddenly found himself. Yet, the land tempted him. He had been sick but now, he seemed better than ever before. Through no fault of his own, he had been outcast, unclean, a pariah. Now, he was regarded as a reincarnation of the land's greatest hero - Berek Halfhand - armed with the mystic power of white gold.

Worst performance
Revisado: 04-28-20
I genuinally wanted to finish this story, but Scott Brick's performance is that of a droning old country sermon.
Listening to him is like watching rabid animals eat your children as you are boiled in a vat of acid OR sitting in the middle seat of a 30 minute flight on Southwest Airlines. To be fair, Thomas Covenant's constant suffering might make those two things equal, from his perspective, but it's exhausting to listen to.
It should not be a spoiler that the protagonist is not a likeable character, you may actively hate him (I do). But a character dosen't have to be likeable to lead you through a good story. This is a decent story bound in hours and hours of exposition.
I think the 5 star reviews must be from people who read this long ago and enjoy revisiting a complex story.

The Best Title in my Library
Revisado: 05-30-19
I've listened to this, end to end, at least five times. I'm not a big horror fan, but Max Brooks builds a story where Zombies represents the things we're afraid of and makes a deep dive into how Americans deal with it.
There's more than one kind of hero, and Max Brooks explores all of them.

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Once Upon a Time...
Revisado: 05-30-19
... there was a fascinating character who went through a compelling story arc to grow into an iconic antagonist for the ages. Here is the story about the army of tedious people surrounding her.
It's as though the author had an alarm at his desk that sounded anytime something interesting is about to happen so he could immediately STOP.
I made it through two-thirds of the story before giving up. Slight spoiler, when Elphaba discovers a cause she is ready to dedicate her life for, a cause worthy of risking her life for, we get it from the POV of her clingy boyfriend who just isn't getting enough time with her.

Historia
Norman Mailer's dazzlingly rich, deeply evocative novel of ancient Egypt breathes life into the figures of a lost era: the eighteenth-dynasty Pharaoh Rameses and his wife, Queen Nefertiti; Menenhetet, their creature, lover, and victim; and the gods and mortals that surround them in intimate and telepathic communion. Mailer's reincarnated protagonist is carried through the exquisite gardens of the royal harem, along the majestic flow of the Nile, and into the terrifying clash of battle.

Half way through and I can't bring myself to care about any character. Putting aside the constant fluid and feces fetish, the story just doesn't go anywhere.

A Fun Story
Revisado: 07-06-13
What did you like best about this story?
Each section had a defined purpose. I like the way the author draws the scene enough to carry a mental picture while I'm listening without delving into excruciating detail for its own sake.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Didn't laugh or cry, but there were sections I enjoyed enough to listen to again when the story finished.
Any additional comments?
I'm going against the prevailing opinion. I enjoyed Alice Eve's performance more in the audio book than the movie. She did a fun accent for 'Scotty' and varied her cadence to define the rest of the characters. I never felt that she was doing 'funny voices.'
My only criticism (spoiler) she didn't do that awesome scream that she did in the movie.
BTW, Eve did a better job portraying male characters in this story than most male voice actors do portraying female characters. I’m looking at you Michael York in Brave New World!
I am clearly in the minority. If in doubt, I think the sample provided is a good representative for the rest of the story.
