Somewhere between Philippa Gregory and Allison Weir, this author was a delightful discovery! She keeps the story flowing in a intriguing manner while simultaneously maintaining historical accuracy. Very well written, with some profound and witty observations, engaging dialogue and authentic psychological character development. The narrator was overall quite good, too, except for the mispronounciation of some words, which was very persistent and irritating, like Christendom :-(. Basic historical terms this type of narrator should really know how to pronounce.

Historia
Los Angeles brims with opportunity in 1959—though not for aspiring fashion designer Cordelia Mai Yin, the first-generation child of Vietnamese immigrants, who finds the city unkind to outsiders and as dispirited as her own family. When Cordi rents a cheap loft in an old apartment building, she quickly warms to kindred souls Tessa, Audrey, and Silly. They also want better things and have pasts they’d rather forget. That they all share the same middle name makes their friendship seem like destiny.

Interesting premise
Revisado: 05-27-24
The story had a lot of potential, but unfortunately the last 1/4 of the book followed a very simplistic, almost childish formula. Not much of the resolution made sense and the protagonists seemed pretty shallow and one-dimensional. I suppose it was an adequate novel to listen to for something light in the background.

Historia
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Not her best novel
Revisado: 05-24-24
Long story short: everybody was kind of a monster and they were all nodding a lot :-). Seriously, that word was in like every second sentence, very irritating. I really like Philippa Gregory, but this was not even close to as good as her historical novels.

Historia
A powerful ruler, an alluring young woman, a scandal that would rock the nation: Anne Boleyn’s life story sounds more like a juicy TV docu-drama than a chapter of English history. Although she is not of noble birth or even especially beautiful, Anne Boleyn manages to rise to the very pinnacle of the English aristocracy. Renowned for her extraordinarily vivid recreations of historical events, Carolly Erickson brings out the full fascinating story of the enigmatic Anne Boleyn.

After listening to countless horrible audiobooks and even more mediocre ones it's a rare pleasure to encounter such a gem. As a former Literature Major a found myself analyzing the novel, looking at online interpretations etc. Definitely a piece of literary art to be enjoyed and savored.

Historia
We spend an average of 33 years of our lives asleep. But what really happens, and what are we capable of, when we sleep? Anna Ogilvy was a budding twenty-five-year-old writer with a bright future. Then, one night, she stabbed two people to death with no apparent motive—and hasn’t woken up since. Dubbed “Sleeping Beauty” by the tabloids, Anna’s condition is a rare psychosomatic disorder known to neurologists as “resignation syndrome.”

Another one of those where the villain gets away with all the most horrible stuff they did. I have enough of that in real life, thank you.

Superb narrator
Revisado: 02-24-23
Probably like most Audible listeners, I am a huge admirer of Ms. Church, her narration is always superb. A real artist. As far as the novel itself...well...it's certainly unusual and I see how some people love it. I didn't. Likely it's a matter of personal preference, but there are so many villains and awful individuals around (especially in politics!!!!!) that I don't particularly enjoy a book where there are among the main protagonists. I prefer to sympathize with them, not despise them.

Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

Not worth the hype
Revisado: 12-17-22
I realize I am in the minority here, but I think this novel is somewhat overrated. First of all I guessed who the murderer was about 1/5 through the plot. Surely it couldn't be this obvious, I thought? Well, it was. Maybe I just read too many crime novels :-). Also without divulging any spoilers: a lot of the mysterious events in the novel never get a resolution. Some people like it and it does create a certain mystique, but I personally found it disappointing. I don't exactly regret listening to it, but I would probably not get any more audio books in the series.

I love Kate Morton novels. They are intriguing, suspenseful , with well developed characters. As is usual for her this story starts out quite confusing and it takes a while for it to all come together and make sense, but the journey is completely worth it!
