Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Morbid obsession to serial killer's life in detail
Revisado: 09-21-24
I enjoyed the detailing of the Columbian Exposition aka 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The Author takes you right into the conception and then begins to expose it with such an all encompassing detail that your mind's eye is there in a full sensory presence. I will now look for more history books to read.
The overlaying of the same detailing applied to the Chicago's notorious, horrific, serial killer's life and detailed story I would rather not have been exposed to. I found it unnecessary because the story of the fair was brilliant and so brutally honest about everything, including how challenging and depressing it was from start of building thought to it's finish.
I couldn't stop reading it, even though the serial killer's story, felt, while reading about him, almost caused me to stop reading the book. It never truly over power the story of the Fair, yet for me, it almost did. This book's best is about the full background and building of the Fair and the men of her glory. When the book would travel into the serial killer's life, it just felt like a really long, dumb commercial that disrupts your favorite movie, I wished I could have paid the Author to cut out the serial killer's story and sell this book with that option. Full 5+ stars for the parts of the book abut the fair as they are so incredibly interesting and vivid in detail.

incredible mystery and original
Revisado: 08-26-24
First off, the narrator is incredible. I couldn't imagine anyone making this book come to life as she has. I only picked the book on a whim because it's length was shorter than most. The title grabbed me as well because, at age 70, I'm looking back on who I was too.
The book started a bit slow as most do. It was the personality in the voice that kept me interested. It's story like was fresh and new and I've read and watched and listened to decades of written works.
The ending had me glued. I was feeling ever word. This is the only book I've ever listened to, or read, that ever frightened me to anxiety. I have so many books that are my favorites but this title will be first off my tongue when asked what is my favorite. I completely believe this book should be listened to and this voice is narration should be the only voice this book should EVER HAVE. This book added much to my life... thrilling, mind's eye glory.

This book 1 Star beginning to a 5 Star end
Revisado: 08-11-24
when I began to listen to this book I would have put to down except I'm reading it for book club and I finish what I start. It was ridiculous and THEN wonderfully profound, It began somewhat rude and unnecessary but that faded away to create a perfect end result. Some of the characters I could imagime their appearance right from the beginning but one character's image was never finalized to become real until the end... and that character in this book was me! I really saw the one who was most like me. One of those seemingly ridiculous characters I completely related to. So if you can get past charter 6 you'll find it hard not to finish. I'm glad I did because the end was what the book is about - to be a true family, you only have to really care about each other.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Too depressing
Revisado: 07-24-24
The book's characters are always first person and each has their own conversation/perspective chapters. This makes reading very choppy and disjointed as you are always reading one person at a time while trying to tie then altogether in the author's story.. It's about ordinary people and families experiencing tragedy and unnecessary violence. i find it extremely depressing and i stopped reading 1/2 way through. Only a few people in book club thought it was worth reading. Life in 2024 is screwed up enough without having to read about unnecessary violence tearing apart ordinary families.

It was like watching a movie
Revisado: 06-20-24
The descriptive words were magical. i had to use a notebook to write them all down. the beginning was romantic, The middle was like a Western cowboy movie and it lost me. The finish was wonderful and beautifully done which made me feel like the middle could have been edited out, imo should have been edited out. it's only because of the middle, that i have it 4 stars. i stuck with the book in hopes the end would match the beginning and it did Beautiful imagery.

Doesn't really begin until Charter 8 or 9
Revisado: 05-02-24
it's written more like an editorial with too much fact building in the beginning and then to much explanation at the end. it's a weird subject and a little disturbing to think it's non-fiction. I'm glad i read it up i drive begin to be entertained until the 8/9 charters
