Historia
Mateo Garcia and his younger sister, Sophie, have been taught to fear one word for as long as they can remember: deportation. Over the past few years, however, the fear that their undocumented immigrant parents could be sent back to Mexico has started to fade. Ma and Pa have been in the United States for so long, they have American-born children, and they're hard workers and good neighbors. When Mateo returns from school one day to find that his parents have been taken by ICE, he realizes that his family's worst nightmare has become a reality.

Lots of potential, but ultimately fell short for me
Revisado: 04-25-24
An interesting story and concept told from a perspective that you don't get to hear from commonly.
Still, the story felt needlessly bloated as it meandered along with elements that felt like pure filler. You could easily cut 4 hours from this story without the story itself suffering. Some of the conflicts between characters felt forced and unearned, and the writing style was overly melodramatic that had me rolling my eyes. Parts the story felt like a slog to get through.

Kinda feel like a zombie after listening
Revisado: 12-16-23
I might be too much of a "Zombie snob" to truly enjoy this one. I've read over a dozen Zombie books including a few others written by Maberry, and this one was just ok.
it starts off slow, but picked up just enough to keep my attention. But I also could've stopped at any point and felt like I didn't miss anything.
There were some definite "eye roll" parts with the dialog and some of the situations. The main antagonist had such questionable motives that he was more of an incompetent comic book villain than a true ruthless product of the apocalypse. Don't even get me started on how obnoxious Benny was. There is trying to add flaws to your characters to give them depth, and there's needlessly making your protagonist annoying, thereby annoying your listener.
I finished the story and was so glad to be done with it.

slow burn that burned TOO slowly
Revisado: 12-22-22
Had a lot of potential, but never quite reached it in my opinion. As a reader (listener) I just felt like I was constantly waiting and waiting waiting for a payout that never came. Even after it ended.

All talk and no action
Revisado: 09-05-22
I'm a big fan of the movie and all its flaws, and was interested in checking out the source material. The story itself is interesting, and it was cool to get a more detailed look at life in the M.I.
But I feel the story does a lot of setting up for payouts that never come. As interesting as all the philosophy on warfare/ethics/morals is -- and the history politics/dynamics of the society they live in, in my eyes it needed to be balanced with an actual plot and opportunities to truly see the characters tested and in action. The book falls terribly short in that regard, but still managed to stay just interesting enough to get through.
As much as I loved the descriptions of the power armor, I would've loved to get to "see" it in action more instead of another long slog about military politics and chain of command.
The narrator's dry delivery was mostly welcomed and helped some of the funnier moments land better, but the quality was all over the place... sometimes it sounded like I was listening with water in my ears.

Historia
One of America’s most celebrated novelists, Cormac McCarthy announced his towering presence on the literary stage with his first novel, The Orchard Keeper. Within the pages of this classic work, John Wesley Rattner, his uncle Ather, and bootlegger Marion Sylder find their lives dangerously entwined in pre-World War II Tennessee. There, the men’s tragedies and struggles are mirrored by the looming specter of industrialization.

Slow, boring, and easy to lose
Revisado: 03-10-22
I really wanted to like this book, but I found it so hard to get into. I had been debating whether it was the story itself or the narrator's unenthusiastic robotic tone, but it's more likely a combination of the two.
It was just so difficult to follow the story and the characters and to stay engaged. I abused the rewind button trying to backtrack and pick up things I missed-- more so than is typical for an audiobook. Still, I'd regularly find myself completely lost with what was going on in the story, who was who, and how the characters got to where they are, I continually felt like I needed to will myself into listening and paying more attention as opposed to just being captivated by the story and performance.
I like the author's other works, but this one just didn't do it for me.

Not good at all...
Revisado: 05-05-21
The mindless, idiot protagonists are so frustratingly stupid with their lack of any type of awareness or basic survival instinct. it's really distracting. Decision after decision they react like no realistic teenager ever would, and it made me begin rooting for the damn house.
The premise and set up was interesting, but I can't stand when a plot must get driven along by character stupidity, and this story has that-- over and over again.
I loved everything about Bird Box... but THIS one? Let's just say not my fave...

Definitely not the movie...
Revisado: 07-21-20
I started this book hoping for a more in-depth and detailed version of the story that was told in the movie-- which I loved.. This book is clearly not that. I'd be reluctant to say that the book even has a "story" at all.
I really had to plod my way through, hoping at some point things would pick up, but it never does. And while I was able to finish it, many parts of the book were just insanely boring. I wonder if my impression would be different if I never saw the movie, but I have a hard time believing that it would've made a difference on my experience..

Cool and nerdy, though at times TOO nerdy..
Revisado: 11-01-17
I came away impressed with the book and the story it told. The author does a terrific job of building and explaining the story's universe, and explaining certain aspects of technology and and 80s lore that I never really knew about.
My biggest gripe with the story was that at times the author got a little TOO into explaining intricate and intimate details of some of the most useless bits of information about old video games and other 80s trivia-- to the point where it felt like the author was just rambling to himself. There were a few times I found myself anxiously waiting for them to push the plot forward and get back to the actual story, but instead we were stuck rehashing old movie lines and old video games for waaay longer than was needed. Also, the Token nature of the Japanese characters came off as lazy and annoying.
Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I felt fully immersed in the story's universe and invested in the characters. I thought the narrator did an outstanding job as well.
