Dark Greasy superhero-ish perfection!
Revisado: 01-23-21
Loved it. RC Bray is the man, but that's nothing new. Story seemed to be written for his voice though. Great dark character driven story. would love to see a movie adaptation for the story.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

A classic dish served in a modern way!
Revisado: 02-22-20
Beautifully written and excellent narration, the story drew me and captivated me. While the story did not feel as fantasy-like as Circe did it has elements of mythology and its strength is in the writing and storytelling. I cannot wait for whatever is next from Madeline Miller.

Historia
For Meredith Gale, ending her life seems like her only choice, and that choice is the reason she’s dangling by her fingertips from a bridge high above the freezing water of the San Francisco Bay. But someone or some thing has other plans for Meredith, and as her fingers slip from the cold steel of the bridge, a disembodied voice asks her a simple question: “Candidate 13: Do you wish to be saved?” Realizing her mistake too late, Meredith screams “Yes!” and instantly finds herself transported to a mysterious island, alongside hundreds of other Candidates like her.

I was gifted this book in exchange for a review.
Many of the books I have received for reviews can be a chore to slog through but I was hopeful with this book based on Kate Reading being the narrator. Not only was she excellent, as usual, but the story was engrossing, unpredictable, and a total surprise. I am excited to listen to the next installment.

Average start but finishes strong.

I enjoyed this as a standalone story though there is a major cliffhanger at the end.
I opted for this book on the Ray Porter factor alone and as usual, he did not disappoint. Overall I really enjoyed the story but the first third of the book seemed to drag on a bit before the story kicked into high gear. The current US political climate certainly seems to have influenced the story but it was not a deal breaker for me.

Middle of the road with some bright spots.
Revisado: 08-08-19
I was gifted this audiobook in exchange for a review.
This story has a great deal of potential and I was far more engaged than I expected to be, despite the story starting off a oddly for me . The dialog was a bit rough at times and I struggled with the main character's amnesia and how it made her "stupid". There are certainly enough bright spots within the story though to give this a shot. The narrator was a pleasant surprise with a good voice and solid range of character voices.

Story was okay but the narrator was brutal.
Revisado: 11-10-18
I was given this audiobook in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
First off the narrator was awful. It was as if I put my GPS on British male and asked it to read this book. Second, the dialog between characters is shallow, even for a YA audience. There is little character development created from the dialog and it didn't feel conversational, The story itself is decent and has promise, but between the narrator and dialog, it made finishing this book impossible, which is highly unusual for me. I am considering finishing the book on Kindle, which speaks to how I felt about the story. I think I could get past the weakness in the dialog if I did not have to listen to the narrator.
