Not a fan of anecdotal stories, me. But gleaned great insight into ways to think in order to throw away stuff, regardless.

I really appreciate the author's unassuming sensibilities and this was the main factor that made me look forward to hearing more and more.
It was so refreshing to read the travel stories of a female author who enjoys traveling for traveling's sake.
Stacy Thomas shares her year long (difficult) experiences teaching elementary aged children in South Korea; and then takes us with her as she explores food, social interactions, bicycling, hiking and seeing parks, hiking trails and beaches all throughout Japan, Laoise, Vietnamn New Zealand and Australia. (Did I miss a country there? there were a lot!)
Her practical, happy, and friendly style left me full of hope and optimism for my own future plans!

I like the narrator and his knowlege but it is incredible how dull and mechanic his reading is. i will buy this as an ebook if I can find it, because the narration is unacceptable.

I love doggies! And I sail and cruise and own sailboats. And I have friends that have long-distanced cruised with their dogs, on a Formosa 51...So I thought this would be a great book. But this was too much about the dog.
The details of vet visits and the interactions of the dog with this person or that situation, surprisingly felt like an interupption rather than a welcome addition to the story, for me. I only got through chapter 3 before I gave up.
The narrator, however, is fantastic. She had different voices and accents in dialogue and a pleasant intonation and inflection and pace. i will look for more books narrated by her.

I sail and admire those who take on Cape Horn. I enjoy reading about conditions, sail changes, headings, repairs, etc...but this book is 70 percent vignettes of the inner thoughts and memories of the author, psychological analogies and reminiscing of other books, music, and boats and only about 30 percent is about the sailing.
It is not a bad book, just not my cup of tea.

Stick with it until the end! Very detailed accounts of what went through Nick's mind over the period of time before he was rescued may feel tedious, but it does bring you right into the mindset one can be in in such an ordeal. It is so mentally irritating I wanted to turn off the book and escape. Then I realized that this is one of the book's virtues. Nick could not just abandon ship. So I did not abandon book. A great read!

If you sail, and enjoy reading about sailing, this book is only good in how absolutely cringeworthy the author's sailing is. (So sorry but it is true!)
However, if you are curious as to how a diabetes diagnosis affects people's lives, thought processes, etc. It is very enjoyable. That is what I was most interested in picking up.
Note to author, even if your boat begins to sink, or is laying on its side, in the water, do not leave it unless rescuers are on the scene or you truly cannot hang on to it anymore. A boat is easier to find than a person.
Do not calculate swimming when you are sailing anymore than you calculate jumping out of a plane while flying. Couple rules-- and your "Captain Jack" taught you one of them "one hand for you and one hand for the boat", but there is another, equally important one! Stay on the boat!
Good luck. I hope your future sailing adventures with the boat you are building give you many happy times with your family.

I love reading true stories of animal husbandry, family dynamics (however eskew) and world views. I was caught up in listening to this woman's struggle to become independent! 5 stars! Go Amanda! Looking forward to a sequel.

If you have already owned and sailed and crewed a variety of boats in a variety of conditions, coastally, and offshore, on long races or long cruising passages, this book is probably going to bore the pants off of you. However, if you are as yet just getting your feet wet in the sailing world, you may find it interesting. The author turns "reef early and often" "dont fall off the boat" into decades long sagas, or so it felt like. Armchair sailors will love.💞

So refreshing and moving. Breathtaking and heartbreaking. I was moved to tears and had jaw dropping moments of awe and delight where the author succinctly described to most poignant "T" desires, epiphanies or sentiments that I previously thought words could only barely flesh out. Also, she included exquisite analogies of sessile biology followed by explanations of the invisible developments and mechanisms by which they live and provided references, resources and footnotes for it to stand firm on and to satisfy the curiosity of other minds. Thank you Hope Jahren!
