Interviews and discussion with new insights
Revisado: 02-02-25
The choices of topics and interviews and the blend of Kenya Barris and Malcolm Gladwell all together brought new stories and insights. The only challenge was that the audio was surprisingly uneven which was at times frustrating when I had to keep adjusting volume.

Historia
Austin Channing Brown’s first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Austin to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority-white schools and churches, Austin writes, “I had to learn what it means to love blackness,” a journey that led to a lifetime spent navigating America’s racial divide as a writer, speaker, and expert helping organizations practice genuine inclusion.

A great read and once again a beautiful listen
Revisado: 01-11-25
I read this in book form when it was first released and wanted to do a re read by listening now in 2025 when these words take on new resonance amidst a resurgence of hated couched in faith groups. While realities are hard to fathom, her words and voice soothed my soul when I most needed it

Historia
Amid the ongoing reckoning over America’s history of anti-Black racism, scores of monuments to slaveowners and Confederate soldiers still proudly dot the country’s landscape, while schools and street signs continue to bear the names of segregationists. With poignant, lyrical prose, cultural commentator Irvin Weathersby confronts the inescapable specter of white supremacy in our open spaces and contemplates what it means to bear witness to sites of lasting racial trauma.

Extraordinary
Revisado: 01-10-25
I was familiar with most of the art he discussed and spaces he visited but I was able to see them with new eyes and discover new layers through his descriptions and discussions. This book is also a beautiful reminder of the power of art, in all of its forms, to remind us, to move us and in these times to keep the memory and true history alive despite any revisionism that might try to diminish it. Thank you for this excellent reminder - I look forward to sharing it with friends and students.

Historia
In an age of confusion, fear, and loss, Hanif Abdurraqib's is a voice that matters. Whether he's attending a Bruce Springsteen concert the day after visiting Michael Brown's grave, or discussing public displays of affection at a Carly Rae Jepsen show, he writes with a poignancy that resonates profoundly. In essays that have been published by the New York Times, MTV, and Pitchfork, among others—Abdurraqib uses music and culture as a lens through which to view our world so that we might better understand ourselves, and in so doing proves himself a bellwether for our times.

Incredible at each read
Revisado: 12-31-24
When I read this after it initially came out I was blown away by its word and spirit. Now getting the chance to listen to it, in his voice, with his occasional verbal updates as well as just the distance of time is a gift of depth and meaning.

Historia
When Ashley Shew became a self-described "hard-of-hearing chemobrained amputee with Crohn's disease and tinnitus," there was no returning to "normal." Suddenly well-meaning people called her an "inspiration" while grocery shopping or viewed her as a needy recipient of technological wizardry. Most disabled people don't want what the abled assume they want—nor are they generally asked. In vibrant prose, Shew shows how we can create better narratives and more accessible futures by drawing from the insights of the cross-disability community.

Thank you!
Revisado: 12-09-24
I clipped so many portions of this to share with others. The approach style and most of all content and meaning behind these words means so much to me and I’d imagine so many others. And ending on the note about children was so spot on. I work with children and am so grateful for the way they approach me and my devices, the smart questions they ask and the way they see me. L beyond my crutches. This carries me through and helps counter every awkward interaction I have with adults. Thank you for this book and for sharing these ideas with all of us!

Revisado: 09-04-24
It was an honor to read and get insight into her brilliant mind and open heart. And to hear it in her voice - recognizing the many hours of time and care her choice of doing the marathon herself must have taken meant all the more. Thanks for sharing your inspirational life with us all.
