Historia
Jeff Speck has dedicated his career to determining what makes cities thrive. And he has boiled it down to one key factor: walkability. The very idea of a modern metropolis evokes visions of bustling sidewalks, vital mass transit, and a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly urban core. But in the typical American city, the car is still king, and downtown is a place that’s easy to drive to but often not worth arriving at. Making walkability happen is relatively easy and cheap; seeing exactly what needs to be done is the trick.

Foundational for City Planning
Revisado: 04-29-23
An absolute must-read for anyone interested in meaningful & intentional city planning. I wanted to start developing my understanding of empirically supported planning concepts and this was a Perfect place to start. Came away with a lot of jumping off points to explore from here - definitely well worth the listen!

Historia
On Anarchism provides the reasoning behind Noam Chomsky's fearless lifelong questioning of the legitimacy of entrenched power. In these essays, Chomsky redeems one of the most maligned ideologies, anarchism, and places it at the foundation of his political thinking. Chomsky's anarchism is distinctly optimistic and egalitarian. Moreover, it is a living, evolving tradition that is situated in a historical lineage; Chomsky's anarchism emphasizes the power of collective, rather than individualist, action.

I'm no Chomp but I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook; it's a great intro to LibSoc Philosophy and has great background into the foundations of his thoughts on a number of topics and his personal history that I found surprisingly good to know.

Historia
From one of the most prominent voices on the American left, a galvanizing argument for why we need socialism in the US today. Bhaskar Sunkara explores socialism's history since the mid-1800s and presents a realistic vision for its future. Sunkara shows that socialism, though often seen primarily as an economic system, in fact offers the means to fight all forms of oppression, including racism and sexism. The ultimate goal is not Soviet-style planning, but to win rights to health care, education, and housing and to create new democratic institutions in workplaces and communities.

On the fence? GET IT
Revisado: 05-28-20
I typically dont like reading modern takes and personal views on philosophy so I had this sitting in my wish list for awhile before finally getting it. It is Way more than just an individual's ideas; it's a thorough dive into the very mixed history of socialist results throughout the 20th century and what we can learn today.
It also offers an incredibly modern application to a real world market we see today. It doesnt just talk about a new socialism, it adapts and applies itself to easily digestible real world scenarios. Absolute must read for any leftist or anyone wondering why the hell socialism is back all of a sudden.

Historia
It is a widespread belief among liberals that if only Democrats can continue to dominate national elections, if only those awful Republicans are beaten into submission, the country will be on the right course. But this is to fundamentally misunderstand the modern Democratic Party. Drawing on years of research and first-hand reporting, Frank points out that the Democrats have done little to advance traditional liberal goals: expanding opportunity, fighting for social justice, and ensuring that workers get a fair deal.

Great History, Great Listen
Revisado: 05-11-20
I've been trying to educate myself as much as possible in my newfound covid downtime, and this has been a Great addition. Doesn't sugarcoat or cherry pick to fit a certain narrative, and doesn't try to pretend like unions were perfect saviors of working people. I loved his mention of the different tendencies that went into organizing, and the world historical context of these ideas. Very good get, would recommend.
