Historia
Shaken by a scrape with death, big-city detective Joe Cashin is posted away from the homicide squad to the quiet town on the South Australian coast where he grew up. Carrying physical scars and not a little guilt, he spends his time playing the country cop, walking his dogs and thinking about how it all was before. But when a prominent local is attacked and left for dead in his own home, Cashin is thrust into what becomes a murder investigation.

I’ve read a lot of Australian fiction, and The Broken Shore remains among the best I’ve encountered.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

A poem perfectly imagined, healing in a year of Covid. Thank you Ms Clarke for Piranesi. .

Historia
Isolated by a disfiguring injury since the age of seventeen, Sean Phillips crafts imaginary worlds for strangers to play in. From his small apartment in southern California, he orchestrates fantastic adventures where possibilities, both dark and bright, open in the boundaries between the real and the imagined. As the creator of Trace Italian—a text-based, role-playing game played through the mail—Sean guides players from around the world through his intricately imagined terrain, which they navigate and explore, turn by turn, seeking sanctuary in a ravaged, savage future America.

Lyrically beautiful, great story. I know Darnielle's music well, but I didn't know he could tell a story so well, let alone write so well about storytelling.

Historia
Beautiful and serene Venice is a city almost devoid of crime. But that is little comfort to Maestro Helmut Wellauer, a world-renowned conductor whose intermission refreshment comes one night with a little something extra in it: cyanide. For Guido Brunetti, vice-commissario of police and detective genius, finding a suspect isn't a problem; narrowing the large and unconventional group of enemies down to one is.

A brilliant debut
Revisado: 04-16-07
Having just returned from Venice (where Donna Leon sets all her mysteries), I'm pleased to have discovered this book, which is evocative, beautifully plotted, and extremely well-written. The final chapters are especially excellent -- not just surprising, but psychology astute and genuinely moving.

Historia
When the Little Nugget, alias thirteen-year-old Ogden Ford, "bulgy, rude, chain-smoking son of an American millionaire," arrives at Sanstead House School, the fun begins. Mr Peter Burns, a none-too-dedicated schoolmaster, engaged by snobbish Mr. Abney to educate his handpicked pupils, soon finds himself and his enraptured class at the mercy of an American gunman...and at the beginning of a series of truly mind-boggling adventures in a delicious Wodehouse tale of suspense, excitement, and romance.
