Historia
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

Gripping historical fiction story
Revisado: 01-26-15
Where does Marching with Caesar rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I've been listening to audible books since 2011 and this is one of my best purchases. It merged my love of history with attention to detail. I somewhat discovered this audible book by accident as I almost didn't buy it based on it's cover which looks pretty boring.
What did you like best about this story?
Best historical fiction book that I've heard. It is also about a period of Caesar's campaign in- Spain, that I did not know about.
Which character – as performed by Simon Burdett – was your favorite?
Main character Titus Pillus who apparently did exist. Btw, the various British street accents of the different characters were highly entertaining.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No. It did however, make me listen more than my regular car journey.
Any additional comments?
This is 1 of 6 books but unfortunately, this is Volume 1 is the only one I find on Audible as of Jan 2015. I'll keep my eye out for future releases

Ken Follett's World Without End was a global phenomenon, a work of grand historical sweep beloved by millions of readers and acclaimed by critics. Fall of Giants is his magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in The Century Trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women's suffrage.

Great Entertainment for 30 hours
Revisado: 11-28-12
I normally listen to factual History books and was in the mood for some fiction. Based on prior reviews, I took a chance with "Fall of Giants" not knowing anything about the author. I was thrilled with my purchase.
The story starts in South Wales prior to 1st world war and rapidly introduces you to different characters that will keep coming up throughout the period that span different geographic regions of Europe, Russia and US and it's sociological changes.
It is a long listen, which was good for me as I travel a lot, but the many chapters are brief so it was easy to listen for short periods without loosing tract.
I will listen to the next book as the next generation pick up the story.

Historia
In The American Future, historian Simon Schama takes a long look at the multiple crises besetting the United States and asks how these problems look in the mirror of time. In four crucial debates - on wars, religion, race and immigration, and the relationship between natural resources and prosperity - Schama looks back to see more clearly into the future. Full of lost insights, The American Future showcases Schama's acclaimed gift for storytelling, ensuring these voices will be heard again.

Loved it and listened to it non-stop.
Revisado: 09-27-09
As someone who has lived here for 11 years, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Like Schama, I am a foreigner reflecting upon why things are what they are and how did we get here.
The breadth of history covered (often out of sync) gave me some insight into why there is no such as a typical American. The book is a great primer into non-conventional US history what you don't see on history channel. For example, I'd not heard of Meigs and the contribution he made to the Civil war nor did I know about other members of his family line before and after.
The stories on TDR, Westpoint, why Texas joined the Union, the uprooting of Cheroke by President Jackson, the German immigrants / Chinese immigrants and their corresponding race riots were particularly entertaining though not always is a happy way.
As for reviewers who dismissed this book with one star. I don't agree with them one bit. I can appreciate History is written by the victor and one man's freedom fighter is another one's terrorist but but I didn't hear Schama writings as being particularly biased.
