Any additional comments?
I read the book when it was originally published and several times since then. It deserve an unabridged version. Audible should go the Full Monty for the WWI Anniversary edition. It is that good.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Good but . . . .
Revisado: 09-06-12
It is good and certainly worth the credit but just a little bit too gushy over a President who was President for so short a time. A Tragic figure to be sure but the pedestal the author puts him on is a little much. The Assassin could've used more stage time - very interesting that one.
The narrator did an excellent job. No problems there.
No regrets over purchasing this one.

Historia
James M. McPherson, professor emeritus of U.S. history at Princeton, is one of the foremost scholars of the Civil War. In this informative and meticulously researched masterpiece, he clarifies the differing ways of life and philosophy that led to this shattering conflict. Abraham Lincoln wondered whether "in a free government the minority have the right to break up the government". And Jefferson Davis felt "forced to take up arms" to guarantee states' rights.

Loved the book, loved the audio
Revisado: 07-02-12
I read the book and was not disappointed in the audio as I've listened to it, or at least large sections of it, over and over. If you want a solid overview of a mind-boggling period of American history this is it.

Historia
The Second World War lasted for 2,174 days, cost $1.5 trillion, and claimed the lives of more than 50 million people. Why did the Axis lose? And could they, with a different strategy, have won? Andrew Roberts's acclaimed new history has been hailed as the finest single-volume account of this epic conflict. From the western front to North Africa, from the Baltic to the Far East, he tells the story of the war - the grand strategy and the individual experience, the cruelty and the heroism - as never before.

Storm und Drang
Revisado: 09-02-11
I read a lot of WWII books and didn't think this would be anything special but I was pleasantly surprised. New facts I'd never heard, new twists on old facts. Yes, it's an overview history so it hits it's highlights lightly but it is a really good overview. If you want a one volume history of WWII this is as good as it gets. Narrator did a first rate job too.

Historia
From one of America's most talented historians and winner of a LA Times Book Prize comes a brilliant new account of Richard Nixon that reveals the riveting backstory to the red state/blue state resentments that divide our nation today. Told with urgency and sharp political insight, Nixonland recaptures America's turbulent 1960s and early 1970s and reveals how Richard Nixon rose from the political grave to seize and hold the presidency.

I came of age during the historical period this book covers and I keep coming back to it over and over and keep finding things of interest. Worth a listen, I think. The narrator does a good job too. No problems there.

Historia
The definitive account of Germany's malign transformation under Hitler's total rule and the implacable march to war. This magnificent second volume of Richard J. Evans's three-volume history of Nazi Germany was hailed by Benjamin Schwartz of The Atlantic Monthly as "the definitive English-language account... gripping and precise." It chronicles the incredible story of Germany's radical reshaping under Nazi rule.

Good but annoying
Revisado: 12-22-10
I agree with the other reviewer regarding the reader. This book needs a second edition update - not read by Sean Pratt. If you can get past the herky-jerky narration then it's worthwhile but I'm off to my local Library for the other two volumes.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

What is the audio equivalent of a page turner? Ear-grabber? Whatever. This is it. I couldn't stop listening. Edward Herrmann is just icing on the cake. He is the best reader in the game.
