Phenomenal and So Encouraging
Revisado: 12-06-23
A truly wonderful book. It is an amazing overview of church history. In Hebrews 11 fashion, it high lights the great Christians throughout the ages, from Polycarp, to Bernard of Clairvaux, to Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It also gives a sense of what God was doing through his gospel in every century. The selection of quotations from works from each century made it felt as if I got an even better sense of the history. As a confessional Lutheran, I disagree with some of the views of Dr. Ferguson, a Reformed Presbyterian, especially about the Lord’s Supper. However, he is truly a great Christian man for whom I have an immense admiration and whom I hope to meet one day, either in this life or in heaven. His Scottish voice also makes the narration a joy. His little book has given me encouragement that our Savior will build his church and will be with us always to the end of the age (Matt. 16, Matt. 28). Even so, come Lord Jesus (Rev. 22).

Makes Me So Excited for the Present Heaven and the New Earth
Revisado: 11-23-23
I loved brother Randy’s book so much. My imagination has been stirred by the Scriptures to desire the New Earth, where God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit will be with us forever (Isaiah 65, Rev. 21). We will be like God for we shall see him as he is (1 John 3). The overwhelming good news is that just as Jesus rose from the dead and has a physical body forever, so will we rise from the dead in our own renewed and glorified bodies in a renewed and glorified universe, praising and serving our God. Randy explores all the aspects of this wonderfully. While there were a few things I disagreed with as a confessional Lutheran, such as brother Randy’s embrace of historic premillennialism, I found the book to be amazing. I heartily recommend it to every Christian and, indeed, every single unbeliever, that they too may be drawn to Christ and worship him with us forever in Heaven. Soli Deo Gloria.

Isaiah 40-66: Audio Lectures features Old Testament scholar John Oswalt teaching through the book of Isaiah in short, engaging, and challenging lessons. Based on Oswalt's Isaiah commentary in the NIV Application Commentary series, these lessons bring the meaning of Isaiah into the 21st century. As Oswalt works through the book passage-by-passage, he comments on the text itself and then explores issues in Israel's culture and in ours that help us understand the meaning of each passage.

This was such a wonderful series of lectures on Isaiah 40-66. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Dr. Oswalt does such an amazing job showing the major themes in the passages. He points listeners to Jesus as God’s Messiah, our life of obedience through the Holy Spirit, and the hope we have in the New Heaven and New Earth (Isaiah 65:17), which is the consummation of Jesus’ kingdom.

Christian tradition often seems to give only grudging approval to married life, particularly its sexual aspect. In these sermons of St John Chrysostom, we find an important corrective to this view.

Historia
The publication of Go Set a Watchman in 2015 forever changed how we think about Atticus Finch. Once seen as a paragon of decency, he was reduced to a small-town racist. In Atticus Finch, historian Joseph Crespino draws on exclusive sources to reveal how Harper Lee's father provided the central inspiration for each of her books. A lawyer and newspaperman, A. C. Lee was a principled opponent of mob rule, yet he was also a racial paternalist. Harper Lee created the Atticus of Watchman out of the ambivalence she felt toward white southerners like him.

Absolutely excellent
Revisado: 03-04-23
I enjoyed every minute of this book. I learned so much about the real Atticus finch. How he is not some liberal intellectual who is above his time in place. In fact, he was quite conservative, and unfortunately, even prejudiced. His real strength came from the fact that, in spite of his prejudice, he still did the right thing in defending Tom Robinson. I have a deep deal of respect for Harper Lee, even more so after listening to this audiobook. I found the reader to be excellent as well.

This book is awesome. It is so much better than the movie, though that is good too. It is the best one so far and I can’t wait to finish the series. Such a beautiful storyline with deeply moving themes (deeply Christian I might add). Jim Dale is also an AMAZING reader!

There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

Historia
Surrounded by a ring of fire, the scorpion stings itself to death. The image, widespread among antislavery leaders before the Civil War, captures their long-standing strategy for peaceful abolition: They would surround the slave states with a cordon of freedom. They planned to use federal power wherever they could to establish freedom. For their part the southern states fully understood this antislavery strategy. They cited it repeatedly as they adopted secession ordinances in response to Lincoln's election.

It is common for many concede that the north did not go to war to abolish slavery. However Oakes makes clear that at the heart of the Republican vision for the union was one in which slavery was gradually abolished forever. This is a great book.

The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Conflict shifted from the battlefield to the Capitol as Congress warred with President Andrew Johnson over just what to do with the South. Johnson's plan of Presidential Reconstruction, which was sympathetic to the former Confederacy, would ultimately lead to his impeachment and the institution of Radical Reconstruction.

Very Well Done
Revisado: 08-20-21
I really enjoyed this book. It was quick and easy to read/listen to. I hope that everyone interested in the era reads it. I really like the thesis of describing Reconstruction as a conflict between middle class northern culture and a white southern aristocratic backlash to that bourgeois revolution. I am interested in the free labor ideology in the north and Guelzo showed how that impacted Reconstruction. Guelzo artfully presents a balanced view about the successes and failures of the era as well. Great work Dr. Guelzo.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Excellent But the Sexual Stuff Tainted It
Revisado: 08-20-21
Madeline Miller has great storytelling abilities. Her description of human emotion is stunning. Also, the way she developed Achilles as a character is really well done. I am happy to have read this book. However, I don’t think it was necessary for Achilles and Patroclus to be homosexuals. I believe strong male friendships are a beautiful thing, think Sam and Frodo or Jonathan and David. Also the sex scenes were way too graphic and not appropriate for younger readers. They were completely unnecessary for the the plot of the story. Overall, however, it was very well done. Bravo Ms. Miller.
