The recent history of live ticketed music
Revisado: 08-27-23
Ostensibly this is a book about ticketmaster and while they are front and center to the book, the real value comes from the exploration of the historic consolidation of the live music industry. It certainly adds much more flavor and background for today's current ticketmaster fights. A must read if you want to know the why of service fees.

When Freakonomics was initially published, the authors started a blog - and they've kept it up. The writing is more casual, more personal, even more outlandish than in their books.

It's a collection of blog posts
Revisado: 11-10-22
They say in advance, this is a collection of blog posts, which I don't hate necessarily. But the posts themselves were surface level and lacked detail. In previous books the more controversial points were supported by a reasonable amount of supporting evidence and context. These blog posts seemingly jump from one conclusion to the next without laying enough ground work to bring be along which left me listening to half the chapters thinking, "that doesn't seem right, what about x y or z, wait you're just jumping to the next thing. ugh."

Stephen Fry and Douglas Adams: A Treasure
Revisado: 11-10-22
Douglas Adam's weird humor holds up just as well today as it did in 1979. Well read by Stephen Fry and enjoyable listen of a new classic.

Pack your cutlass and blunderbuss--it's time to go a-pirating! The Invisible Hook takes readers inside the wily world of late 17th- and early 18th-century pirates. With swashbuckling irreverence and devilish wit, Peter Leeson uncovers the hidden economics behind pirates' notorious, entertaining, and sometimes downright shocking behavior.

I was pretty excited to read this book, but I was pretty sorely disappointed.
The information is interesting but is not conveyed well. The text is extremely repetitive
The other big complaint is the weird sort of side track it takes in the last chapter to turn the book into some argument for libertarian conservatives. I am not going to argue the validity of the points made but they were so awkwardly shoehorned in to be off-putting.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Good but hamstrung by an unlikeable protagonist
Revisado: 03-21-18
Big fan of the Martian but while Artemis has a lot of the same fun attention to scientific detail that helped to fill out the world, it falters with a main character who is just not likeable. Like Mark, Jazz is smart, but instead of seeing a brilliant, good person pushed to the limit, we're hamstrung by a character who is clever enough but constantly falls victim to her own emotional short commings. It almost feels sexist, as if Andy Weir took Mark Watney and in his transition into making him a woman added a bunch of emotional turmoil strictly to hinder the character, as if the only thing keeping Mark Watney from throwing a hissy fit was his Y chromosome.
Despite being the main character Jaz is the least likeable protagonist in the story which is otherwise a fun sufficient hard science adventure.

Historia
At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Aziz is great, the rest is meh.
Revisado: 08-26-15
Aziz is hilarious and I think listening to this audio book is probably a better experience than reading the book. That said this book is written for people who already moderately successful at getting dates in this modern world. Nothing in it is particularly new or shocking but there's a cute narrative and Aziz has a lot of fun presenting it while throwing in fun anecdotes from his research.
I don't regret reading it. But overall, I'd take it or leave it.
