Keeps getting better.
Revisado: 02-10-25
TLDR: This book is a real turning point in the series. If you’ve been hesitant to start book 1 or continue the series i can firmly say it’s worth a shot. Best book of the series so far.
The series has been a fun one from the start, but the past book and especially this one have definitely been a step above the books that came before. If you’ve made it this far in the series I’d be fairly surprised if you didn’t truly enjoy the twists and turns of Felix’s story here. It isn’t perfect, the series could use a few slower arcs that actually show the team spending time together and enjoying each others company for example. That said the lore is getting deeper, plots are already resolving to move on to new and exciting challenges, and it’s getting easier to care about the world rather than just the protagonist.

Historia
The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metalminds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate.

Past and Present
Revisado: 09-16-24
One of my favorite books not only in the second era but in Mistborn as a whole. This book in particular shows one of the reasons Sanderson is such an effective series writer. The hunt for the bands of mourning is a great way of having a story wholly take place in era 2, focus completely on the characters we have gotten to know over the last 2 books, and yet still feel like it rests firmly on the shoulders of Era 1. I found it enjoyable from start to finish and am happy to say that the sanderlanche is as alive and well as it has always been.

Arriving in New Rome, the glitzy capital of sin of a rebuilding Europe, he finds the city torn between mega-corporations, sponsored heroes, super-powered criminals, and true monsters. It's a time of chaos, where potions can grant the power to rule the world and dangers lurk everywhere.

Fun Beginnings
Revisado: 09-16-24
If you're a fan of progression fantasy or litrpg but are looking to branch out slightly or just a fan of fun reads then I highly recommend this series, It is hard to think of a specific series i've read with the same tone or feel as this one. The main character straddles the line of sanity at moments, and I mean that in the best way. It is fully intentional and a believable consequence of his power set. Don't expect a leveling system or a power ladder to climb, but the author does a good job of showing the kind of fun you can have with a relatively simple ability like this one, and how much can be accomplished. I suppose the highest praise I can think of is to say that it is the only series I can think of as a good recommendation for fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl. The characters are very different, and the world isn't as batshit crazy as Carl's, but it hits a similar balance of crazy fun with characters and stakes you come to care for.

Historia
Humiliated in the ruins of Imperial Ithos, with the Exile Splinter stolen from their grasp by the ancient sphinx Kanderon Crux, Havath's Duarchs have assembled an army that dwarfs the entire population of Skyhold. Led by their Great Powers, monsters and mages individually capable of leveling a city, they pose a threat that even Kanderon, one of the mightiest of Great Powers, and her equally monstrous allies might be unable to stop. As the Havathi forces push closer and closer to Skyhold, Hugh and his friends train relentlessly, hoping to make a difference in the oncoming siege.

Bigger is Sometimes Better
Revisado: 06-10-24
This feels like the book that many storylines have been leading to. We return to skyhold and it's enjoyable to spend so much time at the school rather than exploring. I've loved the exploring but i'm a sucker for a magic school storyline. Given the title of the book it isn't much of a spoiler to say that this book has one of if not the biggest mage battles in the series so far, and it's a blast to see the magic system shine. Before we get to that however we also get to see the characters themselves shine in new ways, for example as mentors instead of mentees, and as experienced battle mages instead of students scrapping for their lives. This book takes a few risks, but at least for me those risks paid off and I can't wait for the next book.

End of The Road For Me
Revisado: 06-10-24
I won't go on a long winded review again. If you've made it this far you know the series flaws and you'll either have accepted them or like me will decide to move on. The world that's been built is interesting, the magic system is relatively standard but creates fun opportunities, and the characters are familiar without being to bland. I gave this series one more shot to focus itself or have the mc's actions match his thoughts and words and it has somehow gotten worse instead of better. Given that at the time of this review it has been years since a new entry was added to the series I can only assume this pattern continues until you are left with an eternal cliff hanger in a story that never seems interested in following up on the promises made in prior books. I hope those that still stick with it, I hope you enjoyed this book and continue to enjoy the rest of the series as much as you did the first book.

Historia
At last, the definitive audiobook about perhaps the best cabin crew dramedy ever filmed: View from the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow. In Ayoade on Top, Richard Ayoade, perhaps one of the most 'insubstantial' people of our age, takes us on a journey from Peckham to Paris by way of Nevada and other places we don't care about. It's a journey deep within, in a way that's respectful and non-invasive; a journey for which we will all pay a heavy price, even if you've waited for the smaller paperback edition. Ayoade argues for the canonisation of this brutal masterpiece.

A pleasant and somewhat surreal journey
Revisado: 04-21-24
Those familiar with the author, and have read the synopsis, will be unsurprised to find that this book is a somewhat unique oddity. Or at least it’s not quite like anything I’ve read before. The tone of the book seems to jump back and forth in tone from sincere, to farcical, to genuine without ever feeling jarring. It flows surprisingly well and impressively allows you to enjoy it despite having never seen the movie that inspired it. The depths with which minute details are over analyzed leads to unexpectedly funny tangents that are both ridiculous and surprisingly interesting at times. I often found myself a little mystified at why I was smiling or laughing, but found I didn’t really care as the book put a genuine smile on my face.

Historia
Half a millennium ago, in a desperate attempt to defeat the Ithonian Empire, Kanderon Crux and her allies banished the city of Imperial Ithos from Anastis. Her dread weapon, the Exile Splinter, even erased the memory of its location from the universe. Now it's returning and bringing the Exile Splinter back with it. The great powers of the continent are desperately hunting for the lost city, knowledge lost even to Kanderon herself. None know what ancient Ithonian weapons and enchantments might still be found in the ruins, but the Exile Splinter alone would be a prize to justify war.

The Next Level
Revisado: 04-17-24
Te Lost City of Ithos is the best book in the series so far, and imo has the most compelling antagonist yet. The worldbuilding here is the best it has been and it's definitely fun seeing how far the main group of characters have come. Though the story so far has made it clear that some of the "good" guys are not necessarily white knights, book 4 really shows how certain characters gained the reputation they did, and the type of things that can be accomplished when you weild the kind of power the so great powers of the world wield. Hopefully you'll enjoy the book as much as I did.

It turns out that surviving the depths of the labyrinth and helping stop a coup both tend to attract notice. If Hugh had his way, he'd happily go back to being just another anonymous student. The Story Expands
Revisado: 04-17-24
Like it's predecessor, book 3 in the Mage Errant series expands and improves on what came before. The magic system continues to shine and it's fun to watch the main group grow beyond the limitations that brought them together in the first place. Moreso than the books that came before, TIS feels llke it is setting the stage for what's to come and tying off storylines that are no longer necessary to the wider story the author is telling. If you want a fun progression fantasy story, this is still a series worth giving a shot.

Historia
With The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson surprised listeners with a New York Times best-selling spinoff of his Mistborn audiobooks, set after the action of the trilogy, in a period corresponding to late 19th-century America. The trilogy's heroes are now figures of myth and legend, even objects of religious veneration. They are succeeded by wonderful new characters, chief among them Waxillium Ladrian, known as Wax, hereditary lord of House Ladrian.

Where Sanderson Shines
Revisado: 04-16-24
Shadows of Self is a great follow up to Wax and Wayne, and does something that Sanderson seems to do better than anyone. Tells a story that is enjoyable on its own and answers questions asked in this book, while also serving the greater narrative of the ongoing series and even in small ways the Cosmere as a whole. Despite the ever expanding Cosmere, I came away feeling I got more answers than questions, a rare thing in book 2 of a series. If you enjoyed Wax and Wayne there’s no reason to think you won’t enjoy SOS as well, even if it is a bit darker tale than the first book.

Book Three and Still Going Strong
Revisado: 04-15-24
Book 3 in AA expands the world of Caldwyn in both familiar and unexpected ways. If you have enjoyed the world so far, and the other series Rowe has written, then there is no reason to think you won't enjoy this one as well. There are fun moments to be had and a few surprises to look forward to. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
