Historia
Take a walk through almost any neighborhood in Manhattan and you’ll likely pass some of the most significant clubs in American music history. But you won’t know it—almost all of these venues have been demolished or repurposed, leaving no record of what they were, how they shaped music scenes, or their impact on the neighborhoods around them. This Must Be the Place examines how these scenes came together and fell apart—and shows how these communal artistic experiences are not just for rarefied geniuses but available to us all.

This book is brilliant! Great performance and very well researched, you can tell it is a subject the author is passionate about. I really could not get enough and thoroughly enjoyed my time in each era. If you think that you have heard all there is to hear on these subjects, give it a shot and you will be surprised!

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Historia
From mansions to trap houses, office buildings to strip clubs, Atlanta is defined by its rap music. But this flashy and fast-paced world is rarely seen below surface level as a collection not of superheroes and villains, cartoons and caricatures, but of flawed and inspired individuals all trying to get a piece of what everyone else seems to have. In artistic, commercial, and human terms, Atlanta rap represents the most consequential musical ecosystem of this century. Rap Capital tells the dramatic stories of the people who make it tick and the city that made them that way.

Historia
The music that would come to be known as hip-hop was born at a party in the Bronx in the summer of 1973. Now, fifty years later, it’s the most popular music genre in America. Just as jazz did in the first half of the twentieth century, hip-hop and its groundbreaking DJs and artists—nearly all of them people of color from some of America’s most overlooked communities—pushed the boundaries of music to new frontiers, while transfixing the country’s youth and reshaping fashion, art, and even language.

Rolling Stone founder, co-editor, and publisher Jann Wenner's deeply personal memoir vividly describes and brings you inside the music, the politics, and the lifestyle of a generation, an epoch of cultural change that swept America and beyond. The age of rock and roll in an era of consequence, what will be considered one of the great watersheds in modern history. Wenner writes with the clarity of a journalist and an essayist. He takes us into the life and work of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Bono, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few.

This audiobook version of the mythical text is amazing! Ramiz Monsef did a wonderful job, I particularly appreciated the different voices. If you are a fan of the print version this is a great compliment, or if you are interested in classic rock and want to hear some great takes on it. If there is a gripe at all, I really wish the chapters were labeled the name of the article instead of just “Chapter 23” and so on.

Historia
Ronnie Spector’s first collaboration with producer Phil Spector, “Be My Baby,” stunned the world and shot girl group the Ronettes to stardom. No one could sing as clearly, as emotively as Ronnie. But her voice was soon drowned out in Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, and lost in Ronnie and Phil’s ensuing romance and marriage. Ronnie had to fight tooth and nail to wrest back control of her life, her music, and her legacy. And while she regained her footing, Ronnie found herself recording with Stevie Van Zandt, partying with David Bowie, and touring with Bruce Springsteen.

Historia
Peter Doherty's is the last of the great rock 'n' roll stories—bad boy and public enemy. To his devoted fans, he is a cult hero, a modern-day Rimbaud. Musically, he has defined the past twenty years of indie rock with his sound, lyrics, lifestyle and aesthetic. Since The Libertines rose to international fame, Doherty has proved endlessly fascinating. A whirlwind of controversy and scandal has tailed him ever since the early 2000s, so much so that all too often his talents as a songwriter and performer have been overlooked; for every award and accolade, there is a scathing review.

I CAN stand you now!
Revisado: 08-04-22
A very well written account of not only Mr. Doherty’s life but the chaotic indie scene of the early naughtys. There is quite a large list of characters, and it can be hard to keep up with sometimes. But as soon as you are trying to remember who someone is something crazy happens. I’m now convinced he is no man, but an entity.
Thank you, Peter. This is extremely candid and I wish nothing but the best for you!

Do What Thou Wilt, but you should listen to this!
Revisado: 07-28-22
First of all, Bob Spitz did a wonderful job writing this. It really is nothing short of a sweeping epic, flowing like the audiobook version of an HBO-esque series! Kudos to him for his work on this.
Second of all before listening to this, I was only familiar with the hits and some of the legend (when I was in high school Nirvana was active, and I’m from the Northwest so case closed).
There is no getting around it, there is some horrible behavior in here. And now I find myself conflicted because I became a fan of their music through this book but I also know some things now. Obviously there is no denying the talent or the music, and it does sound just as great in 2022.
I now am curious about Bob’s book on the Beatles…but I’ll wait to get the Led out first!
Also shout out to Rob Shapiro for the spot on narration!

In Corporate Rock Sucks, music journalist Jim Ruland relays the unvarnished story of SST Records, from its remarkable rise in notoriety to its infamous downfall. With records by Black Flag, Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Bad Brains, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, and scores of obscure yet influential bands, SST was the most popular indie label by the mid-80s - until a tsunami of legal jeopardy, financial peril, and dysfunctional management brought the empire tumbling down. This investigative deep-dive leads listeners through SST’s tumultuous history.

What The… (in a good way!)
Revisado: 07-26-22
I was completely into this! I only have a passing knowledge of Black Flag/SST Records, and I found this to be amazing. Some really good insight into the early hardcore days in California, learning about some of their clashes with the police gave me a whole new respect for them.
I had no idea the extension of the SST catalog, it’s crazy to hear some of the albums/singles they put out (like the spiritual advisor to the lead singer of Bad Brains but not Nirvana).
If you like music bios or even books about the business side, it’s definitely worth checking out. 🤘
