Historia
At the end of Eric Cline's bestselling history 1177 B.C., many of the Late Bronze Age civilizations of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean lay in ruins, undone by invasion, revolt, natural disasters, famine, and the demise of international trade. An interconnected world that had boasted major empires and societies, relative peace, robust commerce, and monumental architecture was lost and the so-called First Dark Age had begun. Now, in After 1177 B.C., Cline tells the compelling story of what happened next, over four centuries, across the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean world.

Historia
In the depths of the Great War, with millions dead and no imaginable end to the conflict, societies around the world began to buckle. The heart of the financial system shifted from London to New York. The infinite demands for men and materiel reached into countries far from the front. The strain of the war ravaged all economic and political assumptions, bringing unheard-of changes in the social and industrial order.

It covers the financial control the U.S. had over its Allies both during and after the war.

Many books have covered this period but few have emphasize the pressure of war debt and loans on the actions of both the U.S. and the other nations. I always learn more than I expect from a Toose book.

Historia
Surprisingly neglected in accounts of Allied wartime triumphs, in 1941 British and Commonwealth forces completed a stunning and important victory in East Africa against an overwhelmingly superior Italian opponent. A hastily formed British-led force, never larger than 70,000 strong, advanced along two fronts to defeat nearly 300,000 Italian and colonial troops.

A fascinating campaign well told by this book.
Revisado: 08-06-24
At a reasonable length, it tells about a campaign as important as the western desert that receives far more attention. Its success was overshadowed by failures in over places, such as Greece, Crete, and the Western Desert, so didn't get the attention it deserved, but it had large strategic consequences. The principle actors are well drawn, particularly Gen. Wavell-- all three principle architects of this first victory were under appreciated by the British High Command.

Historia
In her groundbreaking reporting, Naomi Klein introduced the term "disaster capitalism." Whether covering Baghdad after the U.S. occupation, Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami, or New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic "shock treatment," losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers. The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free market economic revolution.

A bracing look at disaster capitalism
Revisado: 07-23-24
It gives a fresh perspective on disaster response, one that even if you think it one sided you need to know. The chapter on Israel and its response to Russian immigration is worth the price of the book all by itself, especially in the light of events since the book was written, including the Oct 7 attack.

An honest retelling of a terrible addiction
Revisado: 06-20-24
I started this knowing that Hunter had overcome a drug addiction as it was during his trial on gun charges. This allowed me to see he had gone through far worse self-inflicted and life-inflicted trauma. He would will be able to handle this. It’s well-written, personal, brutally honest but with grasping at moments to be proud of.. He succeeds.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

It should be required reading for patriotic Republicans
Revisado: 06-05-24
One of the best books on January 6th I’ve read. Well written, urgent, and first person it rarely, tough occasionally gets slow. It should be required reading for anyone remotely thinking another Presidential turn by Donald Trump would be OK. She presents compelling testimony to his guilt in trying to overturn a free and fair election and his lack of the moral character necessary to retain democracy. She also lays out the test of moral character that the nation was subjected to and that many Republican elected leaders have failed. There are exceptions such as Adam Kinzinger, Sen. Romney, and Sen. Cassidy, but they are distressingly few.

Historia
The Hellenica is Xenophon’s continuation of Thucydides’ history of the Peloponnesian War, literally resuming from where the previous author’s history was abruptly left unfinished and narrating the events of the final seven years of the conflict and the war’s aftermath. Some historians consider the Hellenica to be a personal work, written by Xenophon in retirement on his Spartan estate, and intended primarily for circulation among his friends, who would have known the main protagonists and events, having most likely participated in them.

History clearly told by a famous Greek general
Revisado: 03-14-24
Best if you have a good map of Ancient Greece available as you listen. He does an excellent job of telling the military and diplomatic history of Greece from the tail end of the Peloponnesian War to the battle of Mantinea, where Epaminondas died.

Useful comparative study
Revisado: 09-28-23
The novel part of this book is comparing nations going through crises to individuals and what steps are successfully used by the example nations. It thus gives a potentially fruitful way to start thinking about our intractable issues. It gives some examples of what those are for both the United States and Japan.
