This deeply human story was wonderfully engaging, and literary nods to Melville and Dickens (among many others I’m sure I missed) provided great detail and character development. The author narrated his novel with style and humor. The scene of the American evangelist preaching to a local Christian community is not to be missed. I appreciated the acknowledgments and notes that lent further context to the story.

It’s always worthwhile to hear smart people discussing the importance of the humanities, Dylan’s enigmatic art, Shakespeare, Whitman, Rough and Rowdy Ways and whether T.S. Eliot is properly British or American.

As a U.S. immigration lawyer for almost 40 years, I’m frequently asked what would be my solution to the “immigration problem”? This.

I read The Color Purple in the 1980’s, I recognized it as a major cultural work but it faded away from my central nervous system. Seeing the movie and 2 productions of the musical on Broadway was enjoyable but didn’t spark the same profound appreciation I have listening to Alice Walker read this masterpiece.

A special audiobook with significant cultural icons, artists, and Bob Dylan himself reading his words, presents an opportunity to delve deeper into the well known, obscure, or nearly forgotten songs inspiring his own unique contributions to the art. Toggling between narration and a music platform is a must. I’d like to commission Bob to comment on other songs I might have wanted him to include. I’d ask for more female artists featured (how about You Don’t Own Me?), but Cher’s Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, and Nina Simone’s Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood were revelatory high points. There were many insights, historical curiosities, and other cool moments. Together with 2020’s amazing Rough and Rowdy Ways, I’m very much a fan of octogenarian Bob Dylan.

I was very moved by this well-told story of women’s running and struggles for acceptance, with the anchor of Joan Benoit’s triumph in the 1st women’s Olympic Marathon. It has it all. Highly recommended.

For me this final installment dragged a bit more than the previous two. If you enjoyed the Fifth Season and the Obelisk Gate, though, not listening to this one was isn’t really an option. All in all, a highly creative popular sci-fi take on our actual history and present societal divisions with hope for a better future.

This is a moving presentation of the philosophy of non-violence from a key participant of the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality under law. Giving us a a spiritual base, John Lewis was a true and faithful believer in the moral rightness and ultimate victory of human dignity for all human beings. He also reminds us that justice is action, results take time and persistence, and peace is also achieved by nonviolent action in the face of violence. This is a good companion for those engaged in studying American history, and who oppose attempts to whitewash it.

This is a breathtaking tale of Jim Crow Florida in the 1940’s and 1950’s, a dangerous time where white supremacy ruled, black lives did not matter, and equal justice was nonexistent and the object of a reign of KKK murder and terror. Everyone needs to learn of this history and oppose those who seek to maintain abuses of power and injustices that were hardly questioned then. Think about Sheriff McCall when we see voting rights curtailed, or hear of efforts to overturn New York Times v. Sullivan in the Supreme Court, that would allow public officials to silence criticism of their abuses and unlawful activities. The legacies of the Groveland 4 case are very present today.
