Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Pacing was slow at times compared to other suspense thrillers. The denouement dragged out after exciting climax.

A Tale Beautifully Told
Revisado: 04-01-25
Creativity of thoughts, inspiration of resiliency in facing life’s challenges, and the voice of the young narrator forming a credible, fully-developed, relatable character make this a story worth your time—perhaps worthy of a second encounter especially when coming to grips with your own mortality.

Historia
Summoned to the Honolulu hilltop mansion of radio pitchman Barry Buckingham, presumably to trace his missing wife, the Surfing Detective is in for the letdown of his career. Kai Cook is hired to track another lost family member. A dog. Despite his qualms, Kai would seem a natural for the case, since the golden retriever named Kula is a famous surfing dog. Yet the PI knows nothing about finding missing pets. But he does know where to find help - Maile Barnes, an ex-K9 cop and kindred spirit with the keys to unlock the dark underworld of animal theft in the islands.

My 4th in series
Revisado: 02-28-25
Chip Hughes intended to write 6 in his series of mysteries solved by a well-developed protagonist, Kai the Surfer PI. Each novel is carefully crafted with realistic details of local lore and storylines based on actual cases. I’m hoping this skilled storyteller will decide to expand the series.

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Setting’s Authenticity
Revisado: 10-27-24
I’ve been a fan of James Patterson since we shared lunch many moons ago at a Conference for English Leadership/NCTE. When I heard the circumstances of how he and Michael Crichton came to co-author this, I put it on my reading list. And I’m so glad I did !
After moving to Oahu 9 years ago, I delighted in my familiarity of the book’s setting details. In Eruption, these great storytellers don’t disappoint!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Surprisingly Delightful
Revisado: 09-01-24
After learning more about octopus from our aquarium’s docent and a visit by a Seattle Aquarium veterinarian, it could not have been a more perfect time to read this book. I loved having an octopus as one of its narrators. The plot is enriched with complex and lifelike character with a multi-faceted personality and backgrounds. One of the best reads in years.

I didn’t think I’d like it BUT
Revisado: 04-14-24
I usually hate fantasy or sci-fi, so pushed myself through the opening chapters and got hooked. So much so, I just listened for the second time and still keep wanting to be with the characters. Just now heading into the bookstore for a hard copy. Want to revisit the 97 points of recommendations for his son.

Historia
In a novel as warm and embracing as a family kitchen, Barbara O’Neal explores the poignant, sometimes complex relationships between mothers and daughters - and the healing magic of homemade bread. Professional baker Ramona Gallagher is a master of an art that has sustained her through the most turbulent times, including a baby at 15 and an endless family feud. But now Ramona’s bakery threatens to crumble around her. Literally. She’s one water-heater disaster away from losing her grandmother’s rambling Victorian and everything she’s worked so hard to build.
