Historia
Having just celebrated her 26th birthday in 1976 California, Dana, an African-American woman, is suddenly and inexplicably wrenched through time into antebellum Maryland. After saving a drowning White boy there, she finds herself staring into the barrel of a shotgun and is transported back to the present just in time to save her life. During numerous such time-defying episodes with the same young man, she realizes she's been given a challenge.

Anguishing
Revisado: 03-19-25
It took me a while to finish Kindred because it was so hard to hear what was done to the enslaved people, listening to what, I know deep down, were historically accurate retellings, even if this book is technically science fiction.
SPOILER AHEAD
You keep hoping that things will turn out differently, that Rufus will change, be a better man, that Dana will be able to get through to him and he'll free the enslaved people on his plantation without her having to resort to desperate measures, but that never happens. And you're left heartbroken for all the lives that were destroyed. But thankful because you know that at least some of Dana's enslaved ancestors survived and thrived after Dana kills Rufus and leaves her distant past behind for good.
Kim Staunton really brings these characters to life in her narration. And the tension that Butler builds with the time travel aspect is razor sharp. Kindred has left me with a stone in my stomach even though it's technically an "all's well that ends well" ending, left me wanting to know more about what happened to the rest of the enslaved people on the plantation after Rufus died, and left me with a lot of reflecting to do.

Tatiana Maslany is the perfect narrator for this series! She sounds just like Katniss to me, and puts so much emotion into her narration that she brought me to tears, sent my heart skipping in fear, and boiled my blood in all the right places. There's something so much more personal when hearing it like this than when watching the movie, or maybe even when reading it to yourself. I thoroughly enjoyed this book thanks to her narration.

Historia
Trauma nurse Aly Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

Delightfully dark and smutty
Revisado: 02-10-25
Oh, this was fabulous! I don't think I've ever laughed as much while reading a smutty and/or dark romance book than I have while listening to Light Out.
Allen's writing is engaging and witty, and integrates modern life into the story really well. Plus, her dialogue flows so well and Josh is a perfect mix of snark and (overprotective) cinnamon roll, which Morgan brings to life to perfection! He and Wolfe have great chemistry and it makes listening so very entertaining.
I can't wait to read/listen to the second book!

This didn't age well
Revisado: 11-02-24
I should have done my research before getting into this audiobook. I'm just really uncomfortable about a lot of things after having finished this. I feel like there are some folks from whose perspectives white people, me included, just shouldn't write (regardless of the period it was originally written), and a white woman writing about the spiritual practices of an Osage/Cherokee woman while being trained as a shaman by her shaman grandfather and fighting racism against native Americans is one of those. I also found it really weird how sexual her grandfather (by blood!) was with her.

Spicy!
Revisado: 04-19-24
I had originally bought all the ebooks for this series, but then a friend in one of my book groups recommended the audio version. And I'm ever so glad she did!!
I'm a sucker for monster smut, and A Soul to Keep stroked all the right spots. Reyne does a good job mixing fantasy with erotica, and the voice actors Hoffman and Milliken did a really great job. Their chemistry was good and didn't come across as super cheesy, they did fairly good keeping the various voices separate, and they made sure to vary the tones so it wasn't monotonous.
I thought Reyne's world-building was interesting and the concept intriguing. I'm looking forward to the next books in the series, although I'm sad that only the first two books are available as audiobooks.

Full of past and future freedom dreams
Revisado: 02-12-23
I think this has to be one of the weightiest activism books I've read so far. I suggest getting the 20th anniversary edition simply because of all the additions that provide even greater context.
It took me longer to get through it because the history provided is so rich and dense. I had to go back and re-read/listen to several parts simply because I found myself getting lost in the history. There is a lot of inspiration to be found in these pages, but I'm actually at a loss of how to even begin to describe this book. I'm still reeling from it.
I will have to reread it several more times to take in all of the lessons on "the power of imagination to transform society" and all the inspirational freedom dreams discussed in its pages.
Because if you can't imagine the kind of future you want, you can't even begin to build on it. Like Alice Walker said, "Look closely at the present you are constructing: it should look like the future you are dreaming".

A little bit of a let down
Revisado: 01-26-23
Overall, the plot was intriguing and kept me wondering what exactly was going on. I thought it was an interesting picture of a haunted woman dealing with her demons as best she can. But I didn't much care for the ending - it felt a bit rushed and I don't really like some of what happens, but that's just personal preference.
As for the narration, Hillary Huber does a good job as far as inflection goes, and she does the main character perfectly. But I just couldn't get past certain things, like giving a born and bred Bostonian a Southern accent, or the teens' voices. Or the fact that it's clearly a white woman doing Black people's voices... It was distracting at times and pulled me out of the story.
I'm debating on getting the second book in Audible or just reading the ebook.

I thought A Killer's Wife was a good book, although DAYUM, there's a lot of twists and turns. I kind of suspected some of the things that happened, and was like, "Awww, come on! That's just not fair!" LOL But I absolutely did NOT see that ending coming, which was nice!
The narrator, Britanny Pressley, wasn't bad, but a lot of her voices sounded similar in tone, so I had some trouble telling who the speaker was at times.

I could see My Sister's Grave being an old-timey film noir. It just had that kind of vibe.
I had an inkling of how it would end, but didn't see all of it. But I definitely liked the ending.
Emily Sutton-Smith did a good job as narrator. She tried to add in enough variations in tone between different folks and used good inflection, so it didn't feel monotonous.
I'm glad there are more books available because I'd really like to see more of Tracy and Dan, and how their relationship and professional lives progress.

Maya Angelou’s unforgettable collection of poetry lends its name to the documentary film about her life, And Still I Rise, as seen on PBS’s American Masters. “It is true poetry she is writing,” M. F.K . Fisher has observed, “not just rhythm, the beat, rhymes. I find it very moving and at times beautiful. It has an innate purity about it, unquenchable dignity.... It is astounding, flabbergasting, to recognize it, in all the words I read every day and night...it gives me heart, to hear so clearly the caged bird singing and to understand her notes.”

Powerful poetry by a powerful poet
Revisado: 01-19-23
I've never really been into poetry but I'm trying to expand my horizons by reading or listening to books outside my typical comfort genres. I quickly picked Maya Angelou's And Still I Rise to listen to while I was getting dinner ready. I always love it when the authors narrate their own books because they use the inflection that's meant to be there, which I feel is super important with poetry.
Her poem, Woman Work, was so relatable, even though certain aspects of the woman's work I do now is much different from the woman's in the poem. But when Ms. Angelou started singing, I stopped and stood still, covered in goosebumps. It's just that powerful. I need that sound on repeat. 🖤
