Not your gran's traditional ton romance
Revisado: 09-14-20
This write-up is based on a complimentary review copy.
Poor second son, hated by his earl father, needs money to
live on, after cashing out his military commission. He can't
even get a job as a steward. Desperate, he wagers he can
dance twice with a duke's only daughter who's clearly
beyond ton gentlemens' reach. Mission impossible? All
isn't lost, though: she has a crush on his soldier hero
persona. What ensues is a nontraditional ton romance
with unexpected twists and turns just when you least
expect them, all the way up to the requisite happily ever
after ending. (This story is a romance after all.) You find
yourself rooting for the very likable couple and their
sympathetic supporting cast to succeed throughout.

Historia
Just when you thought it was safe to take the train.... It was supposed to be an uneventful trip. A three-day visit to Chicago to attend a funeral. But Eugene Pharrell has just stumbled into a maddeningly treacherous journey back home. One that has pitfalls, phantoms, lost worlds and, possibly, no way out.

Train ride to hell aka the Twilight Zone
Revisado: 11-29-18
This review is based on a complimentary review copy of the audiobook. Something happened to my PC as I started to type this review. MS Word suddenly disappeared, taking all I had typed so far. To add to the frustration, I launched Word again and this time,it froze, with the NOT RESPONDING error message. That everything is going to hell is the story of "The Loop". Full disclosure: I couldn't take the book anymore after the first 30 minutes (but will sneak a peek at the end when I've calmed down). A present day novelist takes the train for the first time to go from Flint, Michigan to Chicago to attend his uncle's funeral. The train trip back is the one to hell, or the Twilight Zone. The main character finds himself repeatedly exiting a train, only to find himself back in one, only with different other people and situations, including going back to Chicago. As with the song "Hotel California" the TV serial "The Prisoner", or movie "Groundhog Day" the guy can never leave. It's enough to drive one, this reviewer, nuts. Do yourself a favor and give this audiobook to your worst enemy, your revenge will be sweet.

Not your typical historical romance
Revisado: 11-13-18
This comment is based on a complimentary review copy of the
audiobook. A devious earl abuses and manipulates his two sons.
The story starts slowly, with the bastard son, Talon, who's spent
life as a privateer, serving time at Newgate prison. The earl
arranges Talon's release, on one condition. Talon must impregnate
his half brother Daniel's (the earl's heir) wife, Kate, to continue the
bloodline. The story has several twists and turns including an ocean
voyage, a Castaway (Tom Hanks movie) like segment, lots of sinful
taboo sex, on the way to its violent conclusion. The book is an excellent
listen, but two themes that are prevalent in this genre, detract from
its plot. The first is that the male lead can't tell the woman he loves
that he loves her, despite the female lead's having done so. The second
is the female lead's unwillingness to listen to the male lead's explanations.
